New SA Attorney-General Supports R18+ Gaming
Recently re-elected Labor Premier Mike Rann has announced a replacement for the outgoing Michael Atkinson as South Australia's Attorney-General. John Rau, a backbencher since 2002 and former lawyer, will step up and take over.
Gamers4Croydon party president Chris Prior had a chance to talk to Mr. Rau last week and after his appointment told news.com.au "He [Rau] indicated to me that the lack of an R18+ for games seemed absurd, and that it was really just common sense to introduce it, considering the vast majority of adult content is already available under the MA15+ classification."
We haven't heard it from the man himself yet, but all signs are positive. However, it's important to remember every Attorney-General must agree for the R18+ rating to be introduced. If just one disagrees, as former A-G Michael Atkinson did, the vote will not be passed. Last year MMGN contacted each state's Attorney-General, but only received a response from South Australia and Victoria. Don't just assume the remaining states will be cooperative, as they've been fairly tight lipped on the subject.
