News \ Play Tv To Record Tv During Gameplay, Dated For The UK

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) president David Reeves has given Eurogamer some more info on the PS3's upcoming digital set top box and personal video recorder attachment "Play TV"

When asked if they intend to let you record TV while playing games he replied "We do, yep". He continued saying "It was very difficult for some of the tech guys but we had to include it in the firmware upgrade, 2.41, but it's done now."

When asked about a release date Reeves sated that it will be coming to the UK on the 10th of September. With a full role out across continental Europe from September to December

sadly when asked about other PAL territories Reeves said that Play TV is being worked on for Australia and New Zealand but wont make it out until January at the earliest. "We've got Australia and New Zealand also lined up for it in January or February, because on their digital terrestrial they haven't actually set the standards yet."

no, no. The US will get the PlayTV for sure.. just not before us! haha its something to do with the fact that all of America hasn't sorted which standard they are goin with.. whereas Australia has.. Oz has MPEG2 style compression PAL sorta system so its most common and very much like most of European countries systems. Look out for New Zealand units to be delayed coz they have a MPEG4 compression system (better than Oz, but they only just got digital their, we've had it for years) either that or we're delayed by NZ, and Sony will do simultaneous release so NZ is not upset?

The US sytem is ATSC.. coming from NTSC somehow.. i dont understand it all, but this is what i've heard n read.

no it wont work as we use a slightly differnt type of TV transmition than in Europe. Thats why its coming out latter here as they have to make different ones for us
