Blu-ray \ Rumor: Paramount to drop HD-DVD exclusivity
Kudos: 6,492

It seams that in the wake of the huge announcement from waner Paramount has a condition to get out of its Exclusivity contract witch the HD-DVD group.
From kotaku.
"The Financial Times are reporting that part of Paramount Studio's deal with the HD-DVD camp included a get-out clause. Said clause would be triggered when and if Warner turned coat and signed with Blu-Ray. Oops. Paramount are now "poised" to do just that, leaving the vast majority of studios aligned with team Blu-Ray and HD-DVD dead in the water. Man, I hope this is true. Not because I give two hoots about either "side" in this "war", but because this fixation with two movie formats has been one of the stupidest distractions from gaming this industry has ever seen."
I’m not putting this in news as it is only speculation. But if this dose turn out to be true it really will mean the end of the format war.

New Line Cinema is going to follow the footsteps of Warner - it's leaving HD-DVD.
Now, when Paramount is finally giving up on HD-DVD, it will spell "DOOM" for HD-DVD.
Bluray is going to win for sure.
HD-DVD lovers can go and return their players early before it's too late!

The war is already over and Blu Ray has won it in very convincing fashion, but if this rumor does come true, it will just be embarrassing really :|

longarms, if you do a little research you will find that this happens everytime a new media format comes out. Blueray vs HD DVD is just very "loud" battle. which will be over soon enough and everyone will forget what a HD-DVD is, except for those poor people that brought the add on for the 360. But i guess if the HD-DVD drive is anything like the drive in the 360 it is prob already broken. =P

Is that from Engadget HD? xD
Well HD-DVD can be the 360's "special" disk format, they can store their craps on there.

Lol, if Paramount does jump to Blu Ray, who knows, maybe Universal will follow, the chart could be looking all blue in a years time, who knows

I suppose it depends on what the people buy the consoles for gdmatt man, i dont think Xbox 360 will fail because of this, but HD DVD will be a dead, buried and forgotten in the very near future i reckon, i struggle to find HD DVD's on store shelves now. :s

no 360 dosnt realy have any thing to do with HD-DVD for the most part. the 360 games dont come on HD-dvds just regualr old dvds. is will only annoy the people who bought the HD-dvd drive add-on.

well if blu ray does win, sony will have finally won a format war, not they they deserve this one even
and why would the 360 fail because of an optional add-on, imagine if bluray won with the blu ray in the ps3 whether you like it or not

Why dont they deserve to win this format "war"? I think they deserved it personally, Sony put alot of faith into the Blu Ray format, and its paid off in the end, it was a smart move, obviously more smarter than having an HD DVD as an add on..

Why do we always refer to blu-ray as a SONY format, there are like 80 companies behind the blu-ray format, SONY is just one of them. Yes they are a major backer but not the only company involved.

I hope the rumour is true, that Paramount is looking to drop HD-DVD exclusivity and join Blu-Ray.
Universal and Paramount are the only two major HD-DVD supporters left. Why would they support HD-DVD when nearly everyone else supports Blu-Ray? Wouldn't they be able to sell more copies of their movies on Blu-Ray rather than HD-DVD? If that's true, and they're still stubborn in supporting HD-DVD ... that means they'll incur financial losses!
I reckon once Universal OR Paramount joins Blu-Ray, the other one will join suit ...
Can't wait for that to happen

They support it because they have been paid trucks loads to support it and have signed contracts, which are not an easy thing to just break.
Paramount it seems has a get out clause written into their contract, Universal on the other hand might not have been that smart it seems.

SONY is the ONLY company making Blu-Ray players at the moment, Others will come later. But sony is the only company making them atm.
Toshiba = HD-DVD
SONY = Blu-Ray
Samsung = DVD

If this is true ... if Paramount does have this get out clause in their contract ... I wonder if they'll actually use it.
Once Paramount goes blu-ray, first thing I'm gonna do is buy Transformers on BD
