I don't think so, el diablo. All PS3 games are region free, so you don't really need it for that.
But the Blu-Ray movies, PS2/PSone games, and DVDs aren't.

they said the ps2 was "unchipable" too. give it time and they will do it but like with the xbox 360 you have to disable it for online use i'd say. that will be more hastle than its worth.

the ps3 shouldnt get chipped, its the exact same as the psp with the same open sourced os so it will easily be overrun with custom firmwares

I want mine chipped so I can play Region A blu ray, and other region DVDs, and other region PS1 games... 
And that is NOT illegal in Australia. I am in no way interested in getting a chip to play pirated / stolen material

So far it's not possible, and honestly I think Sony have done so well because obvious flaws past consoles had it does not.
The games are region free and that's all I need, only reason I've ever thrown a chip in...the movies would be cool but I wont loose any sleep over it.
I do however think that should something come out, it would likely tie in with the hard drive or maybe even using linux to boot it...not sure.
**It's totally fine to chat about this, talking about where to obtain ISO's or break copyrights is what will land you in trouble**
