Hi,
Finally I took the plunge and install Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) on my PS3. My main reason to do this was to have native video and audio supports so that I can watch my avi, divx, xvid, mkv straight from my ps3 (or through local network without transcoding) and also to have a sleep timer on my ps3 (I like to watch while sleeping and let the PS3 shutdown itself when I'm asleep)
Now to the processes:
1. Download the YDL from www.terrasoftsolutions.com/ and make sure you download the latest version and the one for ps3 (if available).
2. Follow the guide here www.terrasoftsolutions.com/ to install the YDL. I also use the backup utility under settings->system settings to back up all my ps3 data (including game data utility, saved data utility, video data, demos, everything).
3. When you have installed YDL, you need internet connection. You can use wired connection (which case it should be recognised automatically) or use a wireless (wifi) connection. To get the wifi connection working, follow this guide www.terrasoftsolutions.com/ You may need to download ConfigWifiKernel.sh from your PC, if you don't have wired internet connection, and use USB drive to transfer it to your ps3.

4. Step 3 allows wifi connection but only with WEP encryption. If you need to enable WPA encryption on your PS3, then you need to follow the guide here dachaac.blogspot.com/
5. Now that you have internet connection, you should update all the software packages in YDL. Do this by running the Software Updater under the System Tools (i believe).
6. Next you want to adjust your video output resolution. Use this guide to determine which video mode that is suitable for you, www.terrasoftsolutions.com/ Note that to get a full screen you should add the video mode number by 128. For example if you choose video mode 5 and you want a full screen you should use video mode of 133.
7. Then you should make the video mode permanent by following this guide www.terrasoftsolutions.com/ Note: you may want to include only the Graphical Mode Configuration that your TV support. In my case, I only use 1920x1080 and 1280x720. You should follow the guide exactly. If you messed up your video setting and cannot boot YDL, then you should type ydl in kboot.

8. Now you have YDL configured. If you want to install VLC and use it to access local network, then follow this guide www.ps3forums.com/ Note that the therepos.zip may not be there anymore and you should use google to search for the file.
That's it, now you have YDL with VLC to play your video and audio media.
OTHER GUIDES:
Accessing your ps3 optical drive:
1. open the terminal, type "su -" (without quotes), and put in your root password.
2. then type "cd /mnt", then type "dir". Here you can check if the there is a "cdrom" directory. If not create it by typing "mkdir /mnt/cdrom".
3. Now you need to mount the cdrom by typing "mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom"
Sleep timer:
1. open the terminal, type "su -", and put in your root password.
2. type "shutdown -h <time>". <time> should be replaced with the time that you system to shutdown, eg. 15:00 or 02:00
Mounting your network folder as local folder:
This is particularly useful when using vlc/mplayer to watch your media on network drive.
1. open the terminal, type "su -", and put in your root password.
2. type "yum install smb4k"
3. now you can mount the network folder using "mount -t cifs //<server>/<sharefolder> /<mountlocation>"
Note: <server>=server ip address (eg. 192.168.1.100), you also need to make sure that the <mountlocation> folder exists.
NOTE:
1. At the moment, the HD (mkv) media cannot be played smoothly.

Note that ps3 doesn't support all avi types. There are a lot of media files that cannot be played in ps3 natively.
In addition, you can also use your ps3 for torrenting without the need of another PC. So you don't need to tranfer/transcode your media files to the PS3. You can also use your ps3 for your email client, instant messaging, word processing (and all the other office softwares).

Well, why not fully utilise a ps3 since we pay for it
. Plus, my PC is not in my room and I like to watch my movies in my room.

Yes, I used to do that. In fact, I use tversity which I think is better than wmp11 and nero. My quest here is to get subtitle working on the avi and mkv files and also I want to have a sleep timer on my ps3. Also you supposedly can play snes games with emulator in YDL but I haven't tried it yet. I may update the guide after I try it.

I don't have a PSN game but I have game demos and it was backup nicely. I assume the backup utility will backup PSN games too. Note you can always download your PSN games again (free) even if you lose them.

Sorry I didn't have any PSN games so I cannot guarantee it, although I think the backup utility will back up PSN games.

So does the ps3 now work like a duel boot pc? Or can you only have the one operating system at a time?

Yes, the ps3 is now dual boot. You have your normal game OS and the YDL OS.
Bun_di, maybe you should have posted this in the guides section?
Good work though. I didn't understand any of it, but good work.

How can I move it to the guide section?
Hmm, I think you'll have to re-type it or something. I think normal members can add guides....
Just click on "Guides" at the top of the page, and see if you can write one.
Oh wait, there is no guides section at the top.....
I'll check it all out.

Here's the guides section, but I don't know if normal members can add guides. If there's a thing that says "Add guide", then you can add a guide. lol

Sorry, I've never added a guide, so I don't know if normal members can. If I tired explaining something, I get people even more confused. lol

Unfortunately I cannot add a guide. I can only add reviews, gallery and news.
Oh, that sucks.
Do you want an admin to add it for you?
