Was wondering whether anyone had any problems with getting surround sound on playing some Blu-ray movies? I have optical cable for sound setup and have no problems with games coming through with DTS/5.1 etc, but when I play movies e.g. Golden Compass it only comes through in stereo. Is this because it is 7.1 only? Any help would be appreciated.

No, you'll need to run an HDMI cable to a reciever, if you have 1 that supports it, optical will only provide stereo sound.

I am running my suround sound system through a optical cable as it dosnt decode sound from HDMI, and the suround works fine for blu ray movies and games in 5.1 (my receiver can reproduce it in 7.1) DTS and DD 5.1.

You can definitely run 5.1 through your optical cable.

My receiver is 1 year old pioneer THX 7.1 ($1500)

I think originaly I had to play with some settings in the PS3 menu. I think there is a setting to make the optical out your main audio out, and selection for audio formats supported by your reciever.

I have the Z-5500 kit. You can, of course, do surround on it but optical only has bandwidth for 5.1 channels. You need HDMI to run 7.1. This is why on some movies I can only do audio in DolbyDig and not DTS.

if you choose bitstream it will send the bare stream (DD or DTS) via optical. if you choose lpcm it will only output in stereo as optical doesnt have the bandwidth... so make sure you choose bitstream only.

oh ok. Well I'm happy with 5.1 seems every few years they just add a few more speakers to surround sound setups just to give people a reason to upgrade.

So some blu-ray movies will only play as stereo if its connected via optical cable?

correct as SWAT is one that is in PCM. You will get 5.1 or 7.1 but only with HDMI connection and I have heard 5.1 ananlog (not sure about that one)

I luv 5.1 - 7.1 and notice this the other day. It has motivated me to go and get the extra HDMI cable for my denon amp

Ah I was wondering why I couldn't get pcm under dts and dolby digital through my receiver, I'm gonna update to a hdmi ready reciever probably a dolby and dts hd to make it future proof.

Yeah just double-check it's "HDMI 1.3" compliant, which is the latest spec. Earlier HDMI specs might not support the blu-ray audio either lol.

i think that is right you need 1.3 hdmi as a minimum to pass through the HD audio formats....

i love how clear and more detail the new HD audio formats give.... i wouldnt go back...

Im getting DTS + DD 5.1 through optical cable. When I bought my receiver last year there where only a few receiver that decoded HD audio from HDMI and they where quite expensive. Most did HDMI switching but thats useless without the audio decoding.

I have seen a Yamaha advertised for $999 with all the HD audio formats. I am currently looking at the sony STRDA3300ES or 5300ES, as the specs look real good but Im not a big Sony fan (just remembered where I was!).

the cheapest entry to HD audio is the either the onkyo 605 (on runout) or the new yamaha 663...

even dd+ is a big step up! most people dont have the hardware to take advantage though, and are happy enough with their setups...

Hi people, I was on ebay looking a audio today and was thinking of getting a 5.1 wireless surround sound system, this is the link cgi.ebay.com.au/

or do I get the 7.1 sound, this is not wireless and will not really fit into my room. however i would make it work. this also has a bluray player which i don't need, may be good for another room. thats the link cgi.ebay.com.au/

its not so much for movies as it is for games, the tv speakers are really bad and i've had enough and want a decent sound system.

i have a samsung hdtv 42" and thought these would be great

wireless sux big time - loose audio quality and you get interference.

Ok another option on ebay for surround sound is this sony muteki system cgi.ebay.com.au/ is there any better? is the price too high? I really don't want to spend more than $1000 and its for my bedroom, I thought this one will last until i move out and then go into a bigger room.

i am still considering wireless as reviews say it is pretty good, and the sound isn't reduced. this is said by people with routers and other wireless devices.
