This seems to be a hot topic online at the minuet, a lot of importers myself included are starting to stress over the possible (yet to be proven since launch by a reputable site) online region coding of MGO.
It appears "region free" is a lie on the ps3 with games locking you into playing with players from the region the disc is allocated (N.A, Asia, Europe, Oceania etc). This is a clear move to shut down importing and force certain regions to pay more for their software, and to be honest makes me sick!
The pathetic excuse "Its needed for performance reasons" is a croc of $hit. Sort games by ping or region lock by i.p if you must, but locking an Asian game to an Asian server is blatant attempt to eliminate imports and competition.
I flat out refuse to pay the inflated Australia retail any more on games software, from now on online region locked games won't have a place in my collection.
Hears an interesting thread with some aussie participation;

if more people adopted your approach Acid then things could indeed get better as far as region locking online play....
However - as is always the case, people will just get out there and buy games regardless of online region locking and the software publishing companies will laugh all the way to the bank.....

Honestly, i like the fact that if i'm going to stick in my MGO i'm only going to play people from my region. I'll gladly pay the extra price for a 'Australian' version if it means i won't get one overseas game or laggy service.

Fortunately MGS4 isn't crack and I'm not a junkie, i don't care how good it is my principals are more important to me then any one game.pensky said: people will just get out there and buy games regardless of online region locking and the software publishing companies will laugh all the way to the bank.....
At the end of the day as long as I don't feel as if I sold out, then thats enough for me. Although the number of people refusing to put up with underhanded price fixing tactics is increasing.

Unfortunately I don't think you've given the issue at hand much thought Mark. The option of choice has been completely removed, region free online would allow you to play aussie only if you CHOSE to do so. You also have the option to play people from overseas, i play with yanks on LIVE depending on the game the lag can be unnoticeable. Some of the games i played on the beta lagged like hell, mainly due to the pathetic oz upload speed average. World rankings will be a lie and you can forget meaningful clan ladders!

I agree.. cant developers just release an option to play in your region, instead of this 'finding game' crap that occurs and you still get stuck in a US server with lag...

Dude, i'm just saying if there is the option to play a Aussie game, or a yanks game then 100/100 times i'm going to choose Aussie, so the fact that they don't even give me the option to play a Yank doesn't affect me at all.
So i can understand why your pissed cause you bought an imported product and can only play overseas matches now. But i'm just saying that for me personally, i would rather pay and extra 20 bucks for an aussie version if it meant playing in dedicated region matches.
And i'm not too sure, who knows you might be able to get an Aussie to invite you into a australian match even though you have a yank copy.

Exactly my point! It should be an option. The ONLY reason it is'nt is to stifle imports and force higher prices.
You should be able to sort games by ping if you wish. The lag with americans isn't that bad if the host has a stable connection with a fast upload speed, I've played aussie hosted matches on LIVE that have lagged worse than u.s hosted matches.
Personally i think the lag issue isn't that bad against certain countries, for christ sake pc gamers get 150 pings to u.s servers. That ping is more than enough for a MGO match.

Thats funny I could have sworn Lair had a $120 price tag on launch, the 1 must have been a mistake........ right!

I dont like that this is turning into an argument that could go nassty.... we just have to agree to disagree unfortunately!
Ill still be gettin my US version from play-asia and giving MGO a shot, and as your said Disco an aussie may be able to add me into a game
If i get that addicted to MGO and want aussies, i can also sell my game to a mate for cheap and purchase the aussie version i fi think its worth it

i agree with you too acid.. i've been playing pc games online for eons and the whole "region locked online" issue with the ps3 is pi$$ing me off. i did buy myself the asian version of mgs4 le (imported from playasia) only to find out the next day that i might not be able to play MGO here in aus. the reason i bought it from playasia is not just because its cheaper, but also cause aus ran out of stock of the ltd edition copies. i didnt have anymore options, and i badly wanted the ltd edition..
its not very fair of konami/sony to do this kinda thing..

I'm not having a go at you or any one else, I'm just fired up over the online region locking its unnecessary and unjustified. From an ethical stand point its discrimination through segregation, there's no place for that in 08.
I hope the online region lock turns out to be untrue, and we can all have a chuckle over how i got worked up for nothing. I'm quite sure thats not going to happen though.

Well seeing as i didnt buy that game I got what I payed for. Your missing the point. On princaple, you didnt want to pay the high prices that we pay for games in this country, and that is your right, but, because of that you now have a lessor game, than other people have. These companies make games to make money, thats their whole purpose, and the only way you can really hurt them, is not to buy their products.

Many did, did they get what they paid for?

Every one has the right to avoid being ripped off.
SpaceSteve said:because of that you now have a lessor game
If the online region lock is confirmed, then extortion, blackmail and international price fixing would be the reasons I have a lesser game.
SpaceSteve said:to make money, thats their whole purpose
We have the money, but not the control........that needs to change.

I do not understand the "you get what you pay for argument" it's exactly the same game only region locked so you have to pay the extra $40. We are not buying a cheap imitation ipod or something.
Buying a lesser game? It's the SAME game your just being forced into paying extra if you want to play online.

that is a golden question... can anyone confirm that?? i can only confirm sometime tomorrow, im sure many others will be able to beat me to it
Actually Resistance was server locked until the 2nd update for it (trust me, I had an asian copy of resistance since us/jpn launch).
COD4 was also server locked until a patch... so was UT3! So it seems to me this can *easily* be fixed in an update... I'm not worried...
