*So long as you are installing a decent HD than you will have no dramas. Alot of members and myself use Western Digital which are awesome IMO and i have found it to be super quiet and keeps cool at the same time...Seagate and Samsung are also widely used across the market.
*You cant directly save games to an external HD but they can be copied while all other audio, video and photos can be sent straight to the external. So in essence if you did not want to save all your media to your PS3 you could just use an external HD for all your media and use the internal for game saves.
*I have not had any issues running a Maxtor external HD which has alot of media on it and the PS3 has not suffered because of it.

You can run any size for the exte

If you restore backup on the same console (not a different console) everything is restored. EVERYTHING.

Photos, Music, Videos, Game Data, Saved Data, PSN Games, Demos.
Even items queued in Download Management!

I've taken the 250GB out of my Gun Metal PS3 ... installed the 40GB in.
I'll be installing the 500GB into my US 60GB PS3, which will arrive sometime soon. This will be my "permanent PS3".
I'm going to use the 250GB in an enclosure, as a portable hard drive.

nice nice..... so can u get new 60g models overseas can u? or is this a second hand one?

anyway now that we know that backup feature works 100%, im gonna keep my 320g backed up in my 500g external so that i know all my accounts/settings/themes/pics/gamesaves/psn games will always be there no matter what.....then just update the important gamesaves onto a usb stick a bit more often

Overseas, yea. American. I think it's refurbished or 2nd hand, hence the good price that I paid.

They are fine for the PS3 as my mate has one in his. Its whisper quiet and they do run pretty cool and the only downside i have noticed is that it seems to take a little longer to load than other HDD's but im not sure if that is across the board or random..

Yeah thats what i was thinking...might suss out an enclosure for it and use it to backup all my stuff so its there and ready to go if need be

Wouldnt it have been an extra $35 for 80gb?? If you paid $115 for 320gb...thats not too bad if you ask me

Haahaa, yeah, its been a long day. Either way ive got my ps3 to access files off my main pc, so 320gb should be enough for now. get me a 1tb when play tv hits the shelves.

No, you can't use files that were created after a backup to simply replace your current PS3's HDD. It doesn't work like that.

You'll know what I mean when you create a backup, go to like X:\PS3\EXPORT I think it was, on your external hard drive.
