Crysis Review - 10/10

Well i've had Crysis long enough now to give the game a good long play, played with the graphics and had a good feel of how hard the game is and all the features. I will probably update this review as i progress through the game, changing bits and pieces and adding in other things i have found, without giving away spoilers of course.

Graphics: 10/10

This is a no-brainer. A game which the creators have said won't run on any current gen console has to look unbelieveable and this game certainly delivers (yes the devs have said a port is possible if they dumb-down the graphics). It really has to be seen to appreciated though. Little things like the weeds sticking out of the leaves on the ground, the well-formed rocks that never look alike, the explosion that results from shooting the petrol canister on the back of a jeep, every 3 second you'll find yourself stopping to marvel at how good it looks (as long as you aint getting shot at). Even more incredible is the realistic way trees are torn apart by your bullets, and shooting one spot repeatedly breaks the tree in half in ery realistic fashion. The characters in the game look amazing, with perfect lip syncing and facial expressions. This games main feature is obviously the graphics and without seeing it in person (and a great computer to play it on) you really can't appreciate how magnificnet this game looks.

Gameplay: 9/10

Right from the start of this game it feels like Farcry. More gritty, more intense, much harder, but it does feel a lot like FarCry, which isn't a bad thing. I always loved sneaking through the jungle off the beaten path to find a vantage point to take out enemies and it's still just as fun, even more so cause it looks so good doing it. Enemies are a lot smarter now, and sneaking up on a hill top to pick people off always runs the risk that someone with a sharp eye will see you, shoot up a flare into the air, and you'll see people arriving on boats and jeeps as backup. Taking enemies out is made all the more fun with the environmental kills. I've dropped trees on enemies heads (which looks incredible graphically), picked up barrles and tossed them into enemies faces, and shot exploding barrles near huts (which takes out the hut and everyone near it!). The only small beef i have with the gameplay is the difficulty, even on normal. A small encampment can take 4-5 goes to take out not just because the enemies are very smart, but because you're almost constantly low on ammo. When 5 guys are running at you, and you only have enough ammo to take out 2, you need the ammo from the 2 dead guys to kill the other 3, and it makes it a lot tougher. You end up dieing and you have to rethink everything. Situations like this can be overcome if you take a long time to do it and use heaps of the cloaking ability, but it's quite tedious and i personally don't have the patience for it. The special powers your suit has aren't overpowered and run out quite quickly in fact, but do help out immensly if you use them smartly. The super speed gives you fantastic running speed, but only for 2-3 seconds (enough time to get a good distance on the enemy). By default, the extra armor is always active, and always reactivate if you run out of cloaking, so if you are revealed to enemies you stand a chance. Practising the abilities helps out immensly in battle and i recommend it.

Sound: 10/10

The sound in this game is incredible, especially with a good set of headphones. Shooting a tree in half results in a perfect tree-crashing-to-the-ground sound, explosions sound fantastic and the enemies talk to eash other frequently, yelling at each other and telling you to die. The sound from your footsteps changes perfectly with the terrain you walk upon which is always welcome. Vehicles and gunfire sound top-notch too (when you've got ammo lol) and the panic you can here in enemies and team-mates voices is very convicing and adds to the games incredible immersion.

Overall: 10/10

This game is a must-buy for any FPS fan. Spend the money to upgrade your PC if you must. I bought my computer:

Dual Core AMD 4400+
MSI Neo Motherboard
2 gig 800mhz DDR2RAM
2x 160gig HDD in Raid0
Xpertvision Geforce 8600GT 512mb
Pioneer DVD Burner
Nice case/psu

For only $950, and you could put in an 8800 series videocard and a 6000+ amd for a mere $300 extra, which would smooth out the game further (and allow some anti-aliasing, mine looks a bit jaggy) so $1400 would buy you a good enough PC (provided you already had everything outside of the tower) from www.umart.com.au (the online store section) to run this game very well. I picked mine up, so postage would be extra, but the game is worth every cent of money you have to spend upgrading your PC, and it's unlikely any game will be this system intensive for at least the next 6 months. Not even currently released games like COD4 or Bioshock need anywhere near the specs, so if you buy a Crysis-ready PC now, then you're set for a long time. Get this game OMG!

This game just keeps getting better and better. I'm now a fair way into the game and it's just incredible. The options you have to dispatch enemies and complete objectives is fantastic, you can do anything you want. I had to navigate a minefield so i backtracked through the game just a little, carried an explosive barrel back to the minefield, threw it in and blew the lot up (instead of shooting them individually). It's this kind of freedom, along with the best graphics ever that makes Crysis the best FPS game i have ever played.

Hey, have you by any chance played a game called "Forsaken" ??

And because your computer can play lots of games well, doesn't mean it's high end...

My computer can't play lots of games well, it can play every game (bar 1) perfectly. I never said my PC was high-end, i was simply showing you why it's not 'crap'. A 'crap' PC wouldn't play every game ever besides Crysis maxed out.

As for Forsaken, the best version of Forsaken was the N64 verision. The PC had the graphical advantage, but the N64 controller was perfect for it (and still looked amazing for its time) according to every review and my own experiance. I was godly at Forsaken 64, totally undefeated in the 6 years i played it consistantly, even against 3 people against me. Foetoid was the name of the character i used every time. Shadowman and Forsaken 64 are the two Virtual Console titles i want the most, but Nintendo are being a bit greedy and only releasing thier 1st party N64 titles first...and still got like 8 to go

I guess so. Being able to play every game except Crysis totally maxed out with a very smooth frame rate on a PC that cost less than a 60gig Ps3 and has better graphics MUST mean my PC is crap! How did i not see it before OMG! LMAO

My PC runs Crysis very well, everything on Medium in 1440x900. It pwns the minimum specs and matches the recommended specs perfectly except for the videocard.

Callan, dude... your computer's hopeless... like I consider my PC ****, and it's better than yours you need a total upgrade... the processor is just too old, and by the sound of it, your motherboard needs replacing as well... put an 8800GTX in that thing and you're effectively not changing anything as it'll be so bottlenecked you'd be better off playing with the card you've got now.

DVD-ROM,Windows Vista
DirectX: DX10

I think 8800GTX needs to replace my current graphics card and it should run smoothly....hopefully The game is an absolute bitch to run, seriously

EDIT: When i get the full game i'll post up some screenshots for you man

You need to double your ram, and if your system bus and cpu bus runs at 800mhz, match it with appropriate RAM. It makes a world of difference when the motherboard/ram/cpu all run at the same front-side bus speed. Also another gig will allow you to run your ram in dual-channel (unless you already have 2 x 512mb sticks in dual channel, i'd sell them and pair up 2 x 1gig sticks). That cpu will stuggle a tiny bit, but an 8800gtx will make up for it. Find out what cpu your motherboard can handle and buy it off ebay, thats how i upgraded my 733mhz p3 to a 933mhz. Like i've said, check out umart.com.au especially when they have a NSW store open (unless you live in QLD obviously). They have amazing prices.

EDIT: Also if you have 2 HDD's (i have 2 identical, in brand and capacity) consider running them in RAID0 if your motherboard supports it. It can be tricky to set up, but it pretty much forces windows to think you have a single HDD of the total capacity of 2, and since its phycisally connected by 2 cables (cause it's 2 drives) it doubles your HDD transfer rate from 300mb/s to 600mb/s.

it looks ok but it has huge amounts of jaggies because of the zero AA.

i'll take some screens from my comp and put them up.

That videocard is your archiles heel for sure. I get about 25-40 fps in 1440x900 with everything on medium with my video card. May i suggest this one: www.umart.com.au/ Go to the videocard section on the left, click on PCI Express, then go to the Xpertvision videocard right at the bottom.

Man, it's like you go into ridiculous detail about how you bought/built your PC, when a simple yes or no would have been fine... but you don't really say anything about your performance? I'm not really worried if they don't look like the ones above... technically I'm in the market for a new PC, and I want to see how it really runs on a mid range PC... So how about some screens and frame rates?

I did mention my performance. It runs smoothly enough to be very playable and i havent noticed any major frame-rate issues. I'm not sure how to measure the frame rate on my pc, nor would i know how to post screenshots here. I'm guessing printscreen would take the screenshot, but how would i post it here. I need to find out how to measure my framerate too.

I purchased each of those parts individually from www.umart.com.au and picked them up. If you make your order online, but pickup the order when you pay, you still get the lower 'internet price' you'll see if you look at items. I ordered the items, picked them up the next day, bought a nice case/psu locally, and put it together in my lounge room. Took me a bit to work out how to run Raid0 config for the HDDs but it was worth it. I've had another look on the umart website recently and the price for most of my components has actually dropped, so $950 would probably cover the same PC with a 5400+ or something. I also got the videocard off ebay for $235 including postage (most expensive part of the PC lol). But yes i built it myself, i already had the 19" widescreen monitor + accessories and software. Umart are also opening a NSW store in sydney if you're interested in checking out the website. Have a look at the other online store on the left to have a look at the prices. When i find out how to measure my frame rate, i will post it here too. Mine doesn't look as good as the above screenshots, but it's still fairly close and very very nice.
