I don't like LCD. I sell and install HDTVs for a living and i fine the 700a Panasonic Plasmas look much better and vibrant without the motion-blur associated with LCD tv's. But if you must get an LCD, Sony Bravias are they way to go.

Yes, plasmas are better than LCDs at the moment, but it always changes because sometimes one technology leaps ahead. Last year LCD was better, but the winner this year is truly PDPs.

Sony LCDs are very good, but when it comes to colour reproduction and contrast, Sharp kills it. It's weird right? Because you hardly find people buying Sharp TVs, but in Japan and the US, Sharp is the number one selling TV brand there.

Very true, but from my immediate experiance and from everything i have read/heard, Panasonic is dominating the Plasma market with the best displays money can buy. This one (in varying sizes) is the best: panasonic.com.au/

Any panasonic model that ends in 700a is the best TV money can buy right now.

Yep, I must hug you know XD

Panasonic is the leading plasma seller because the TVs are good AND affordable. However, if you have the money, Pioneer PDPs will give you all you need. Wow, have you seen the Kuro plasmas yet? They are breath taking!

It is already out, but it's only in Japan it costs $3000, it's only 11 inches and it only lasts for 30 000 hours.

Toshiba and Samsung stated that we won't get 40inch plus OLED TVs until 2012, so that's more than 4 years

You should check out some OLED videos and how the screens are made, it is fascinating! Each one of them are made individually and with care in a laboratory.

OLED is fantastic but i think Laser will be better. It can display 90% of what the eye can see (comapred to 30% on LCD/Plasma) it weighs less, costs less to make (so cheaper in the end) uses less power and is thinner and brighter than LCD/Plasma. The only reason they havent rushed Laser TV is because LCD is booming right now and to release a new TV format would kill the amazing LCD sales.

oled and laser are both below the quality of LCD and plasma at current state - it wont be a good until they have been out for a few years after they actually have been on the market - dont even know why people talk about them... the Oled's only last about 1 years and for a round a 20" screen they cost approx 20k or something rediculous like that....

current LCD dont have motion blurr any more just like plasma dont have the burn screen issue....

OLED and Laser are far superior than LCD and Plasma, where can you get 1 000 000: 1 contrast? OLED! Where can you get more than 150% of the NTSC colour gamut? Laser!

I'm just sad SED won't be happening

Man, this is an awesome TV! The best purchase ever!

Man ... going from a 40" Teac Plasma (Component connection) to a 52" Bravia LCD TV (HDMI connection) ... unbelievable.

The quality ... smoother graphics, clearer, brighter, more spacious (due to resolution).

I'M LOVIN' IT!

Yeah, I got a 46" W Bravia yesterday. Before the Sony offer rumours turned up on the web last Saturday, I'd already decided on this model. I know they aren't perfect, but it met all of my criteria:
- Around $3k... Tick!
- Full 1080P... Tick!
- 46" minimum... Tick!
- 24P mode... Tick!
I would have gotten the X if it had anything particularly better about it, but it has that cruddy 100Hz motion flow you coundn't pay me to use. Spec wise the only thing the 46X had on top of the W was a slightly wider dynamic contrast ratio. The static contrast was the same, brightness the same.

The free PS3 is just a bonus!

I've calibrated it today and will watch a movie tonight, see how it compares to my old one (particularly on the black level area). But so far I'm seeing:
- No linearity issues
- No overscan
- No convergence issues
- No flaring
So far, looking pretty nice.

I got the extended warranty, so I'm intending this one to last me 5 years. By that time, hopefully OLED will be out properly...

Go Michael! I love that TV

To be honest, 100Hz is just a marketing tool so people can buy the new TVs. LCDs wiith CCFL backlight can't really improve much, the future is LED backlighting in LCD screens, which will be released next year.

Calibrated TV = TICK TICK TICK, how much did you get yours for?

I am amazed at the price alone of Sony's Bravia's at the moment, let alone the free ps3 by redemption!

I saw the Sony Centre add for Hobart and it had the Bravia X current model 52" for either 4525 or 5252, something ridiculously cheap!

They are the best tv's when we firts got ours I used to watch the demo channel for ages just looking at how amazingly sharp animal fur etc was, you can individually see every hair on the kookaburra for example, and lions whiskers were razor sharp it looks so cool.

100Hz is more than a marketing gimmick, it is a prime example of actually _creating_ a problem and then over-engineering a solution for it... Eg, Source material is generally always 24 frame based. So rather than doing a simple idea of say 5x every frame and running it at 120Hz (which I believe they do actually do in the 24P mode) they instead introduce faked frames. I'd dearly love to see examples of the interpolated frames in action movies.

Got it for $3000, which just put it into the lower bracket for the extended warranty. Plus a PS3... So I'm pretty happy.

Yeah, I can see how LED backlights would help, giving finer light control and better blacks. Of course the LED pitch is going to be much coarser than the LCD pixel pitch, and then light bleedout (unless they are somehow able to confine the light to the pixels it is controlling).

OK, well, I've watched a couple of movies with a lot of dark scenes (Disturbia and Rest Stop). Thoughts:
- Yes, the black levels are not quite as good as the CRT rear pro, and definitely not as good as plasma. May be better watching in a dimly lit room actually. It doesn't suffer from flaring like the rear pro though so that kind of cancels out the down side for me.
- It's internal upscaling from a 576P component source is actually excellent.
- Not too sure about dynamic contrast/backlighting. And I guess how it will apply to LED backlighting as well. It seems to be playing in real time and trying to adjust after the fact. It'd be better off buffering playback calculating ahead the backlight changes, so it can adjust in time with average light level changes.

Other than that, an excellent set, and way better than my previous in every other aspect. So I can live with it until there is a robust non-burnable alternative (eg, OLED).
