Online, PSN and Hosting \ PSN and connection problems

Hi all, A general question to all you online users. I'm eventually set up online with my PS3 through a Wireless connection and have all my updates etc both for PS3 and RFOM. But I seem to have a problem staying connected to the PSN. Internet connection is fine, I've opened up ports on my router, DMZ and all that. But going online is sporadic, ie Saturday night could not get on for love or money (around 11pm) whereas last night (Sunday 10ish) no problem but every now and again get booted from PSN and therefore lose connection in RFOM. Is it my set up or do others find PSN connection a fickle beast ?

I'm finding staying connected a problem also. Sunday at around 11:pm, I had trouble staying connected to the PSN. And I recently changed ISP, so I'm thinking it was my new ISP. But I never really have a problem surfing the net. I can only think that maybe they are doing something to the PSN, hopefully upgrading it.

On a side note, has anyone noticed lately, that a lot of the online games for COD4, you have one bar for internet connection when playing? Game after game last night, I would get just one bar. And lately, I sometimes get a message that I can't connect to IW online matches.

How far away is your wireless router/modem from the PS3, try moving it closer & see if it makes a difference.

Signal strength is between 85 & 95%, about 10m away through 1 plasterboard wall. Also have Wii connected but no problems on that. Always have Internet connection on PS3 just PSN drop outs.

I haven't a static IP with my ISP either, the IP however is static between my router and the PS3. So you should be okay, look out when you go online... cause once you do you're hooked, I'm only on RFOM at the moment but COD4 seems the way to go !

Well, last night I get online (eventually), connection through to PSN, didn't get disconnected once from it !. Go figure !, did get two disconnections from network on RFOM though (on Worldwide servers) so can live with that. Especially seeing as I WON my first online Deathmatch ! Then got thrashed in the next...but who cares !

Hey Cathy, when you say you can't play, play what ? If you mean the game you downloaded (presumably on your PS3) have you 'installed it' ? If not highlight the game, hit 'triangle' button for options and it should enable you to install the game.

The internet comes up okay and then I say I want to download a game at www.Mechquest.com - it comes up okay on the tv but I cannot play as it will not allow me to enter the game. Why?
I thought I would be able to use the PS3 as a normal pc am I wrong?

Cathy, what are you downloading from Mechquest ? I doubt its a PS3 game from that site but in fact a PC game and therefore can not be played on the PS3 (others correct me if I am wrong). If you want to download stuff to play on the PS3 then go to the PSN (Playstation Network) and get Demos or buy games through there. The PS3 can be used to surf the net & stream music and videos like a PC but actual games must be specifically for the PS3.

That is exactly what I needed to know. I assumed that the PS3 would work like a normal PC - stupid me.

The ps3 can run a different OS like linux, then it would work more like a pc.
