Try this..
Turn off everything(including modem)for 2mins
Unplug cable that goes from modem to pc.
Plug that into your Ps3
Turn everything back on.

You wont be able to have Pc and Ps3 on at same time without a router.

Depends if his modem has a built-in router, some cable modems have a few extra ports these days.

Give us a bit more information jfi2ee, we cant really help you with the info you gave us.

ie: does your modem have a built-in router or not and are you using broadband?

Well when you say ur modem has a port that fits the ethernet jack on the PS3, is it an additional one on your modem, so the modem still has a cable running to your PC, or is it only one port on the modem, so you have to disconnect the one running to the PC?

How many ports (holes) are there on the back of the modem? Do you mind taking a picture and show us?

theres four ports, three have plugs in them but the other is free. The port thats free fits the ethernet cable but its the only one on the modem. The other ports are different including the cable that runs from the phone to the modem.

hey, here is a couple of ideas:
1. if u r using the ethernet port on your pc (the network cable) then u r going to have to share the net on your pc. right click "my network place" -> "Properties" -> now u have to right click on the connention that your internet is coming in on and select "Properties" for that one -> select the "Advanced" tab -> now tick the box in InternetConnection Sharing section.
Plz note that the ps3 will only have internet when the pc is on.
2. If u r hooking the usb to your computer from the modem. (im taking a guess there) then if u hook up the ps3 using the network cable to the modem, and pull the power to the modem for like 1 min then plug it back in, u might get net running both on the usb and network cable off the modem. depends on the modem. i know some adsl modems let u.

if u can tell me your modem model number, i can give u detailed help, or recommend a couple of routers u could get, then u would have these sorts of problems =P

Seems like you will need to use a router. Are you connecting the modem to your computer by an ethernet cable?

That could be a problem..alot of routers dont have USB input for the modem i dont think..

Is there ethernet connections on the back of your modem at all?

u got a newer optus modem im guessing. if u disconnect the usb cable from the modem and hook the network cable from the modem to the ps3. Now pull the power on the modem for 1min then plug it back in. not sure if u really need to do it with the newer models, but do it anyway to be safe. now the ps3 has net, but make sure u do the setting on the ps3 too.

u should really get a router.

i forgot to say, i believe the optus modems dont let u run both the usb and network port at the same time, but im not sure.

Just get a router it will solve all your problems, and give both your PC and the PS3 internet capabilities.

This is a PC related question but I have the SpeedStream5429 wi-fi modem and a Toshiba Satellite Laptop which is wireless enabled.

How do I create the connection for the laptop to recognise the modem. I can't find anywhere in "Create Connection" to enter the SSID and the WEP key.

Any ideas?

ummmm, im not quite what sure u are asking here? u want internet on your laptop from your wireless modem?

1. do the settings on the modem. u access the modem setting by going to "http://speedstream". u will have to do this on a computer that is connected to the router by a network or usb cable. refer to your manual for doing the wireless settings.
2. on your laptop you have to find the program that controls your wireless. U can access the default windows one by right clicking "My network places" then selecting "properties". Now right click "Wireless Network Connection" and select "View Avaliable Wireless Network". I believe u just refresh the list and when u select it, it will then ask u for the wep and so on. If it says "Windows cannot configure the wireless connection blah blah blah" in the main window, that means some other program is controling your wireless. trying looking in the toolbar next to your windows clock, it might be there.

not sure wat this has to do with ps3, but yeah
=)

yeah i explained that before. but the problem there is u can only have the ps3 online when the computer is on. a nonwireless router cant be that much. thats is if u have any money left after buying the ps3 lol
