Battlefield Bad Company Review - 8/10

PLEASE NOTE: This review is purely for the BFBC single player campaign

FPS games have come along way since the PS2 days. With the PS3, developers can finally let their creativity run free, and introduce a new level of realism never possible until now. Ever since the release of Call of Duty 4, other FPS games have seemed dull, boring and unfinished. Battlefield Bad Company sought to change this by introducing a new level of destructibility never seen before in a video game. Imagine being able to blow a hole in a wall, level a building with a pull of a trigger, and crash through trees, fences and enemy positions with a Tank. This is Battlefield Bad Company.

Welcome to B Company. A mismatched bunch of rejects, troublemakers and insubordinates make up your battalion. When the danger is too high, and Special Forces are too valuable to waste, the Army calls on B Company. You are Preston Marlowe. Transferred to B Company after a “misunderstanding” with one of the Army’s new attack helicopters, you suddenly find yourself in the middle of a war zone. 3 other soldiers make up your squad. Your squad leader, Sergent Redford, your communications specialist, Private Sweetwater, and your dim witted Explosives “Expert”, Haggard. 4 soldiers, a ton of ammunition, and a battlefield full of enemy soldiers. Hoo Ra!

War. It’s a terrible thing. Fighting for something nobody cares about, in a place no sane man would go. But what if you sound something worth fighting for. Something that made it ALL worthwhile. Well guess what? We’ve found it. It seems a Private Army of mercenaries have been stockpiling gold. A lot of gold. Would you risk it all for a chance to earn yourself a share in millions of dollars of gold? Of course you would! BFBC is a unique experience for any FPS fan. The level of destruction in the game has to bee seen to be believed. Dice, the developers went with a “Grain” effect as a filter, this is one of the first thing you’ll notice when playing the game. It’s even present in the CG movies. It doesn’t look bad, but at times it can make the game feel unfinished. The explosions and destruction effects can also suffer a slight delay, but this wont ruin your overall experience.

BFBC also offers a large arsenal of weapons. From shotguns to Rocket Launchers, it’s all here. Throughout the game players will come across collectable weapons and gold. This is mainly here to promote a second play through the games single player mode, collecting any missed items. As BFBC is set on large battlefield areas, you’ll need to be able to cover a lot of ground quickly. Perhaps a vehicle? Tanks, Jeeps, APC’s and even golf buggies are available at your disposal. Even a flyable attack helicopter makes an appearance during the game. All vehicles have there own strengths and weaknesses. Tanks are strong but slow, while Jeeps are fast but much weaker. You’ll have the option to choose an appropriate vehicle at certain points throughout the game.

Another thing clearly present during the game is the much more realistic sound of your weapons. Guns sound, feel and behave much more realistically then in any other game I’ve ever played. BFBC also features a unique sense of humour throughout the story mode. Its funny for a while, but after time the one-liners become corny, lame and VERY repetitive. The AI is another problem in BFBC. To put it simply, both your squad and the enemy soldiers are pretty damn stupid. Your squad is either too slow to react, or has the magical ability to see the enemy through walls, the same can be said for enemy soldiers. BFBC also suffers from the same problem that plagues many other next gen games. It’s too short. The game can take anywhere from 6-8 hours to complete depending on your skill level.

Closing Comments

So, with all the bugs and problems present in BFBC, is it really worth your hard earned money? Well, id say yes if you’re a big fan of FPS games. But if you’re a avid player of the genre, then either steer clear or rent it first. BFBC, like many other FPS games also suffers from pretty poor replay value. Once you’ve finished it, it’s a case of “been there, done that”. Battlefield Bad Company is a welcome addition to the PS3’s FPS library. Although it’s far from perfect, it still delivers on what the developers promised, A level of destruction never seen until now.

I’ll see you on the Battlefield.

The voice acting and corny dialogue stopped me from giving the sound 10

Yeah good point, I only have the demo so I can't judge the whole thing.

What I meant was the sounds on the guns were the best i've ever heard in a video game.

Great review GTADude man
I kind of agree, the single player is good, but doesn't really have much replay value. I have to try it online sometime.
