Thats pretty cool can you only use it on certain games.

Exactly. As long as the current and charge are near enough. Charge it with some AA batteries if you like, or from a wall socket, anything that's around 5V

the Wii has the option to leave it on yet not running with that wiiconnect thing on so its not really off. see if you dont have wii connect on then your wii won't be charging the PS3 controller. makes sense?

That makes sense - I leave Wiiconnect24 on all the time so that would be why there's still power to the USB ports. It doesn't explain why the SIXAXIS starts charging again when I turn the wii on however. Its not really a big issue, I was just wondering if it meant that my controllers aren't being completely charged by the wii while its in standby mode or what.
It'd be great if Sony could include power to the USB ports while the system is off, though I suppose in a pinch I could work something out with Folding@home's auto shutdown.
