With my xbox i had an idle shutdown of 1 hour, so if i was watching a movie at night and i fall asleep an hour after the movie completed the xbox would shutdown.
Now I use my PS3 for my media (Only because my xbox is to noisy) but I fall asleep sometimes and wake up to see my PS3 still on and I get annoyed that such an advanced machine doesn't realise that nobody is using it and shutdown. this may be a fault of my own because i haven't found an option that may exist.
But then again my six-axis stays on aswell which is silly, even the Wii controllers shutdown after 10 minutes on non use.

A lot of people...myself included have wanted an 'auto off' timer as well. I to used to like 'falling off' in front of the telly, but can't if using the PS3. It is a feature the PS3 should have, and i'm guessing will soon.

Some people like to keep their PS3 on like a computer. My Controller turns off when not in use after about half an hour I think

You can use F@H on your PC. the PC client has been around for much much longer than the PS3 version. Its just that no one had really heard about it untill the PS3 version came around.

its not like ps3 is "behind" 360 because of this....ps3's were made to be capable of working 24-7, as evidenced by the in-built F@H program that comes with every console, so leaving it on after a movie has finished running wont do any damage at all......like red ring of death for example. i agree its maybe something that COULD be there as an option, and they COULD put it into an update, but thats the whole thing with ps3's, they can always fix/tweak heaps of things and put them into updates.....360's cant.....so i guess they're just working on the most important things first, like IN GAME XMB, BLU-RAY LIVE, HOME etc........geez if they wasted time on stuff like this and it delayed Home even further then what would you say?!?!

I would say that the HOME team and the firmware team are in different countries and that they don’t affect each other.

hahah what a bunch of bickering girls...
I totally agree that the ps3 needs a 'power save' function
my PS3 is dead and been in for warranty well over a month now and i actually blame myself for always leaving on because i a)to slack to turn it off b)passed out c)didnt actually care that it had been on for 1-2 week straight
Anyways... Hopefully in tha not to distant future, this feature should be implemented

umm...
lets just say the PS3 did have a shutdown fucnction...
what about your TV and home entertainment system?
They will still be turned on.
Stupid feature that doesnt need to be implemented imo.

My TV does have a Shutdown option, are you stuck in the 60's, and as for the home entertainment it goes into stand by when the tv is off,
this is a much needed feature, people that do not require it do not have to use it.
But i dont understand how people can say that its a stupid feature, its an essential with any TV if it was stupid it wouldnt be implemented at all.
i didnt want to play the fanboy card but that is what some people sound like

Well atleast its gonna turn one thing off
in my eyes i see this feature doing the PS3 good...IF you chose to turn the feature on
Even if its possible like a hibernate feature
