Playstation 3 Hardware \ PS2 Controller to PS3 Problem

i recently bought one of those PS2 to PS3 controller converters off Ebay so I could use my old PS2 controller on the PS3. The controller works fine in the Playstation network section but as soon as i load up a game (Euro 2008) it doesn't pick up the controller at all.

Has anyone else had any problems with controller converters like this?

Any idea why this would be happening?
