As the title suggests: Is Wii changing gaming for the worst?

All this talk of casual gaming and their baby releases that everyone seems to like. Don't get me wrong, Wii is pretty cool, I own one; its by far the best selling console on the market. Because of this, developers may turn to 'Wii style' gaming (the stuff us hardcore gamers hate) and could change (or wreck) the gaming industry permanently.

Its just a theory but think about it, could Sony and Microsoft's next gen console be a Wii-like for the casual gamer? Would they forget about us hardcore gamers and the games we like for their profit?

I don't think the Wii will cause hardcore titles to disappear. However I do feel that the other companies will try and copy, just like MS's new motion control they're working on which ultimately can mean more "gimmicky" titles on our consoles.
A sad side-effect of greed...it sucks companies tend to focus on money > quality.

I quite like the casual aspect of the Wii, working full time I don't get much free time and I enjoy making lots of progress quickly.

I definitely don't think developers will start making kiddy titles on 360/PS3 because they're popular on the Wii. I do expect some "shovelware" though if Sony and MS were to copy Nintendo further...god help us all if that happens!

I agree with what your saying, but one step can lead to another, first the gimmicky titles start coming and then the hardcore disappear

The developers that make those "hardcore" games (Valve, Epic, Insomniac) will never develop for a console that is a generation behind, which the Wii is. Forget about the motion sensoring, because the shovel ware has shown how much of a gimmick that is. People say that's innovative, but it's not. Euphoria is innovative. I think the thing that a lot of Wii devotees forget is that the power of a system doesn't just dictate how a game looks, but rather how it feels and what's in it. If GTAIV were to appear on Wii, no way in hell Euphoria would have been possible. That's the problem with Wii. If a developer can really use the Wii-mote to advantage (Galaxy is a great example, but it's first-party), then the Wii is for the best. But that won't happen. The Wii is appealing to a demographic of "non-gamers". They've (Nintendo) said it very subtly themselves. Ninty fanboys can't admit it. As we see it, non-gamers are falling into the trap of buying a console with an appalling library. That's what they're basing the gaming industry on, and it's disappointing. My sisters know more about Wii Sports then they do about GoW or Bioshock, probably two of the best games this generation. Wii Sports is fun for 1 week. It's also disappointing that a company has gone from a console with one of the best library's (GC) to a console with one of the worst in the history of the industry (Wii).

I cant even imagine what the next generation of consoles will be like so even if say sony and Msoft (or whoever else is in on it) do go down this path im guessing their 'inferior' consoles will be no worse power wise than say a PS3. There will still be developers making awesome non-kiddie games that im sure will be fun.
But hey who knows 10 years ago I was wondering if Goldeneye was going to be beat for graphics! (Still up there in gameplay though IMO)

The Wii is bringing more people into gaming who werent interested who werent interested before, that has to be a good thing for the industry. Most of them core style gamers who like the Nintendo first party games (myself included) and purchased a Wii for those or for it's inovation, trying something and seeing where that leads almost definately bought one of the other consoles as well.

I don't think the hardcore titles will disappear on the 360/ps3 and i think the Wii will probably end up with more of them. In the end the Wii is aiming for a much larger auidence, casual gamers, non-gamers and core gamers (for Nintendo's few first party titles) all have a interest in the Wii. Broader market = good thing and as long as there is the more hardcore consoles to go with it there's no problems.

I beleive there is some sort of new Wii Sports coming out?

I think Nintendo should have heavily focused on getting the 1st Wii Sports online enabled.. THAT would have revolutionized the industry even more.. Think someone's forearm swing in Oz is being replyed to by someone's backhand in the UK.. Sales would be double what they are now of Wii!

As long as Nintendo fine-tune the motion sensing (to be much more accurate) and enable some great online features for a next Wii Sports i'll be sure to get it!

In that case, why am I'm a picky hardcore gamer who refuses to buy mini-game compilations or crappy shovel-ware titles and i've found 11 Wii games to own. And i dont even own most of the A+ titles like Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, Smash Bros Brawl, Battalion Wars, Geometry Wars or No More Heroes. If i can find that many games worth owning without owning the best games (Well, i still own Zelda, Metroid, RE4 etc) on top of my 12 GC games and 13 downloaded games, anyone can. There are PLENTY of decent Wii games that use the controls perfectly, but those titles are just outnumbered by ****ty shovelware 10-1. Being outnumbered like that is crap i know, but that still leaves plenty of other decent games to own. Heck my brother-in-law owns a dozen of the best 360 titles and he's always begging me to come over with the Wii cause he's bored. Im getting a 360 no doubt for FFXIII, Gears 2, Fable 2 etc, but the Wii is not even 1/10th as bad as you say.

Yeah the new Wii Sports comes bundled with a attachment to allow perfect 1-1 control. There is sword fighting, disc throwing, jet-ski racing etc and it's all controlled 10x more accuratly than before. Dunno about online, but it's a given.

but, the sales of the wii is so high. but its unfourtunate that the wii wasnt built for performance on hardcore gaming. its more family fun, for anyage you could play a game. if nintendo had put their act together then maybe you could see some good titles. but sadly , no.

and yes, i dislike most of the new wii titles, they are too childish with an arcade feel, if the giant corporations started to create games like these then people here like you and me would suffer, because developers would all create their own versions of these games.

nintendo are always the "innovators" who take big risks (the wii) that could cost them.

It's not the fault of the wii. It's just that there's a lack of developers who want to make proper use of the wii hardware. It's actually not as pathetic as some might think, but the library of games is...well...really bad...

I don't think it's going to impact on the PS3 or 360. In fact, you'll probably find that a lot of wii owners also have a PS3 or a 360 (unless they're like 5). I myself am getting a PS3 at some point so I can actually get some games that are decent. Don't get me wrong. There are quite a few great wii games out but the majority of the games don't satisfy.

Basically, I think that while the wii is successful, there's a garuntee that great, visually appealling games with good, classic controllers will always have a market. It's mostly the price and initial appeal of the novelty wii controls that makes it so appealing to people. It's also a great console for kids.

I think it's a good introduction for you gamers into gaming. I don't think that a lot of the FPS' of the 360 and PS3 would be beneficial to younger gamers given the content (although it's definitely better

I don't think it works that way. It will turn no gamers into casual and gamers and it will stay that way. Most casual gamers are casual gamers because of their busy lifestyles, so its almost impossible for them to become hardcore gamers. I really hope some good quality hardcore gaming titles (GTA4, MGS4, FFXlll) bring in LOADS of money so developers realise that there is a market for hardcore games and not everyone likes casual gaming.

I recently got a Wii and I'm sure I will probably play it a lot more than my PS3. I don't think that games library is that bad, it has a few good titles. And also its good for when you friends over. I think Wii would be changing gaming for the better.

As with anything in business, developers are driven by $$ - very few people work because they actually like it.

On the 360 - HALO was a benchmark gaming experience that helped sell the console. And made Bungie developers very rich in the process. GoW is a similar situation, as was HALFLIFE.

The sheer volume of sales of the 'hardcore' titles will always attract developers while there is a market for them - dont think PS3 and 360 owners have too much to worry about except an influx of shovelware.

Have a Wii myself - as has already been said - its fun in small doses, or with a group of friends. But its never going to replace a marathon GTA1V session

I always though so. I mean, a lot of people seem to be getting the Wii over the other consoles but none of them seem to be the "gamer" type, more the casual gamer. All the proper gamers who are helping the industry thrive would have already purchased a PS3 or 360.

The Wii is not doing good for the industry but it's growing so fast and there's not enough "gamers" buying the Wii for it to destroy gaming. Game developers do tend to follow trends to sell and get rich so as long as there's a high demand for GAMES and not "games" we will be ok.

What do you mean there is not enough "gamers" buying the Wii for it to destroy gaming? It possesses almost 50% of all TV console sales!

I'm the opposite, I had a Wii first since launch, and then got a PS3 with a Bravia this year; I play my PS3 MUCH MUCH more. The Wii is cool for when family and friends come over, but for a true personal gaming experience, I'd go turn my PS3 on

Casual gamers make up the majority. Casual gamers aren't the ones buying the Wii. It's the "non-gamers", or people who wouldn't normally care if they had a gaming console or not. The typical, normal gamers are still buying it, but if that were the case, the Wii would be like the GC; at the bottom. It's the "non-gamers" catapulting Wii to the top.
