PlayStation Home will be used to host virtual business meetings in an attempt to cut costs and reduce carbon emissions by UK companies including Ernst & Young. They hope the strong online community will make daily communicating easy and reduce the amount of time they have to meet in the same location.
The project is being trailed by Dr. Nipan Maniar and Manish Malik from Portsmouth University. They were commissioned by Advanced Workplace Associates, who hope to find ways to reduce travel and office use by improving long distance communication. Other firms including Microsoft and Merrill Lynch will take part in the virtual world trial.
"Increasingly we are living in a world without borders where workers need to collaborate on a global scale.Audio and video-conferencing solutions have emerged but the use of virtual worlds may offer the next evolution in overcoming the tyranny of distance - a more realistic and learning-enhanced environment" said managing director of Advanced Workplace Associates, Andrew Mawson.
As the Internet grows more and more people are finding opportunities to work from home. As communication becomes easier workers physical location is becoming less important in some industries. Advanced Workplace Associates hope to improve this further, who knows perhaps one day we'll all work from home and meet via the PlayStation.
