Playstation sales down over Christmas
Sony has released its official sales figures for the third quarter of 2008, confirming that it was a rather disappointing period for the gaming brand.
The Q3 covers the busy Christmas period, yet Sony's Playstation division was down 32% in revenue in that period, down to $393 Billion US from $581 Billion US. Quite shocking numbers. However, these refer to revenue and not profit, and it's unknown where these numbers were able to still spin out a profit for the gaming and entertainment giant.
While the XBOX 360 recorded record sales numbers throughout 2008 and the Christmas 2008 period, the PS2 had the largest decline with 2.88 million less consoles sold than the same time last year with the PSP also down 680,000 and PS3 down 440,000.
Software sales were also down, with the PSP down 2.8 Million units from Christmas 2007 and the PS2 down 32 million units. Such high numbers are understandable considering the slow death of the PSP and less support going to the PS2 over the past 12 months.
According to CVG, Sony accredited the slump to the financial crisis and slumping Yen against the USD and Euro.
