News \ Grand Theft Auto IV has gone gold!
Yes members, it's finally gone gold! (the game code has been sent to the presses to be manufactured for our sticky little fingers)
During Take-Two's shareholders' meeting today, the publisher said that GTAIV has gone gold. The game is "in production and in trucks en route to retailers," proclaimed Take-Two CEO Ben Feder. Rated M for Mature, GTAIV will be released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on April 29.

Gold refers to the master disc that is produced by the CD publisher.
This is the "stamp" from which all other CD's are produced.
It is traditionally a gold disc to deter corrosion and any breakdown, so the industry picked up on the terminology and when a game goes "gold" it is in its final print.

The term gold anecdotally refers to the use of "gold master disc" which was commonly used to send the final version to manufacturers who use it to create the mass-produced retail copies. It may in this context be a hold-over from music production. In some cases, however, the master disc is still actually made of gold, for both aesthetic appeal and resistance to corrosion.
