Rumor. Sony switching to Intel Larrabee GPU for Ps4

"Here's the silicon scuttlebutt of the weekend, if not the week: Sony will use Intel's Larrabee graphics chip in its upcoming PlayStation 4. (Let's not forget the other tantalizing piece of speculation this week: the Nvidia-powered Microsoft smartphone rumor, which Microsoft apparently put to rest.)

So, chalk that up as one big win for Intel's somewhat-murky next-generation graphics chip due late this year or 2010. Now Sony? A report this week in the U.K.-based technology Web site The Inquirer claims Sony favors Larrabee over Nvidia for its PlayStation 4. (The other major piece of silicon used in the current PlayStation is a Cell processor developed jointly by IBM, Sony, and Toshiba.)"

It's been a while since i showed my face here (thanks to MyFrag) but i saw this rumor and had to post it.

Intel and the GPU? Oh no......I'd rather they stick to their CPUs

They should just shove in 4 Nvidia GPUs (GTX) and add 3 extra large fans inside the PS3.

I'm definitely getting the next-gen Xbox. I don't want to spend another $1000 on a machine and let it sit there while I wait for decent games to come out in months/years.

Yeah i can imagine what issues it will have judging by the past, original xbox power cord faulty could start fires, 360 has RROD, 2ROD, error 72E or some crap and faulty comp cables but hey third times the charm im not falling for it. The next one will more than likely be a copy of a PS3 with what they should've done this gen. They gonna revive HD-DVD? lol they'll get shown up by apple (if they enter the console wars) and or SONY. Lets not forget kingpin Nintendo lol.

Original XBox power cord was a minor error and started very very few fires and wasn't a huge deal, unlike the DVD debacle of the Ps2 when it was first released. RRoD i aint going to sugar coat, but at least you get a free replacement. I think Microsoft have learnt their lessons, in fact i think all 3 have. M$ will have a Blu-Ray capable console with no hardware faults (why is Nintendo the only one with faultless hardware.?), Sony will do an obvious hardware upgrade, keep the Blu-Ray player, but it'll be a lot cheaper than the Ps3, and Nintendo will release the Wii 2.0 running in 1080p, 200gb+ hdd space, WiiMotionPlus built-in to each controller, keep all Wii games backwards compatible (with possible upscaling) and add GC/Saturn/Dreamcast games to the Virtual Console (but no Blu-Ray drive).

Those are my predictions anyway.

They've invested too much money in Blu-Ray to move on so soon. Plus multiple layer Blu-ray disks will be able to hold whatever they need for the Ps4. I can't see the new series of 3000p/4000p/5000p Tvs happening till 2020, so 1080p is the way to go for a while yet.

but there was other rumor that said sony wont be doing a ps4 till 2017 or something, to get the ps3's 10 year lifespan. i wouldnt want a ps4 next year or even in 5 years, the ps3 just came out in 07 , so 2 years.

If Sony are currently in talks with potential next-gen GPU manufacturers only 2 years out from the Ps3 launch, i can't see them extending the Ps3s life to 10 years like they originally claimed.

If Sony is already talking to next-gen Ps4 GPU manufacturers, they'll be sticking to the 5 year cycle to get a jump on next-gen and get a headstart on Microsoft so they're not in 3rd place again. I know they did say 10 years, but with Ps3 sales still trailing other consoles, they'll probably go back on that statement and instead stick with the 5 year cycle. No way will they wait till 2017 when they're talking about a new GPU already.

Start talking about the console in 4 years. Theres no point talking about it now. No one knows whats going to happen and theres no point in guessing because thats just pointless. There might not be another PS for another 15 years, look a GT5 it has been delayed about three years now and it says it COULD be released at the end of the year.

I know I read a article the other day writtin by one of the anylist from the gaming indusrty and he said that although a lot of people are saying 2011/2012 is when the new consoles will be coming out it will be very unlickly due to the economic position, and he said that the current consoles will probably live longer than everyone is expecting and related to the ps2 and said that if you remember GOW2 did not come out until the 7th year of the console! So I think we could predict that the ps4 may be longer away than everyone is predcting!

well how will the consumers react? another playstation. there are still many people who still have a ps2 and havent moved onto the ps3. Sony would be taking a big risk in doing so, because the ps3 hasnt had its chance to stand out, show the full potential of its graphics and capabilitys. and, with a global economy crisis how would it settle with production costs? im not against a PS4, but im saying that if they were to release a new ps anytime soon not everyone will be able to afford one.
