yeh the ps3 will play CD,DVD,blu-ray and there is NO need to get the remote but most people are just prefer the remote to the contorler(if you have ever used a ps2 dvd player it is exatly the same interface when using the pad.)

If you want your normal DVDs to be upscaled:

-It's got to be through HDMI
-It's got to be a DVD file type disc (..say original DVD)
-You can see the TV thread, I posted some pictures of the upscaled DVD images and the Bluray images
