PS3 Console \ Mp4 Questions

mdell says:

Can i watch converted mp4s from a blank dvd or dvd rw or only removeable drives such as memory sticks etc?

I tried it last night and it said "unsupported format" but i was using tmpgenc to convert and i might have used the wrong settings.

(Edited by Grey Snake)

Which is the best mp4 converter?

I'm using PS3videoconverter 3 and it's soo slow.

Takes me 2 hours to do a 90 min movie when it takes nero or convertx to dvd only 45 mins to make a dvd movie from an avi.

It's quicker coverting to dvd format than mp4??

If anyone could help me out that would be great!

I have watched MP4-AVC from my removable 80gb USB harddrive.

www.redkawa.com/

but the AVC format that the ps3 uses is much better a compressing but it also takes longer to encode.

I use ps3 video 9 aswell (someone on here recommended it to me).

It used to work well but doesnt seem to workj for me anymore even tho i redownloaded it.

As soon as i click one click convert or convert video it immediately says conversion complete - yet there is no mp4 in my mp4-avc file...

the only time i have seen that hapen is when i have put the "padding" setings values to something other than an even number. are you using a defalt seting or a custom one grey?

also do you guys do 2 pass encodes, i do cause it makes the videos sooo much better quality but it also dubles the encode time

Does anyone know the answer to this yet ? Im currently converting some avi movies , once they are complete will I be able to view them on a DVD-R or will the PS3 only allow them to be viewed from a memory stick or the PS3 HDD ?

If it does accept DVD-R , can you then put more than one file on a disk if it fits ?

I have successfully converted avi's to MP4, and burnt them to a DVD-RW and watched it from there.

It look me a few goes tho - the naming structure seems to be a little different than the HDD or Memory Stick...

For the PS3 to recognise properly converted MP4 files on a DVD, the files need to be in 8.3 filename format, and placed in a folder off the ROOT of the disc, called VIDEO (yes it must be uppercase, too...)

crazynites says:

Cool , I understand most of that but could you explain the 8.3 file format bit please ?

klue says:

The filename can have no more than 8 characters in from of the .mp4 extentiion, and no illegal characters. Bit of a throw back to old MS-DOS days (showing my age here...)

Eg: Scrubs Episode 1.mp4 is not valid
but
scrubs1.mp4 is fine.

No probs Let me know how you go.

mdell says:

yeah ive been watching them off bland dvd's too.

Easier and quicker just to convert them to dvd format though rather than mp4. Takes me about 45 mins to convert to dvd rather than 2 hours to mp4.

Hopefully if the xvid support for the Fall 360 firmware update is true...it might make Sony follow suit.
