I am trying to back up all my saved data on my PS3. I am using a 16GB USB and when i go to system settings and backup utility i get an error code (8001002A). My USB is formatted to FAT32 so does anyone have any suggestions on what the problem could be? Any solutions?

I have googled this s*** for a while now but i am getting different answers everywhere. Although a few people have mentioned restoring but apparently that deletes everything on the PS3 hard drive.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Take a look here boardsus.playstation.com/

Are you sure the size of the back up will fit on 16GB? You may have to use a different programme to format the USB device. I use a programme called "Swissknife".

^^^yeah friend that link was actually one of the sites i looked up on it. I've deleted alot of saved data, really isnt alot there to backup so i don't think the USB size is a problem.

What would be a good amount of space though? Just to be safe.

Well if you want to be safe, size of backup device = size of PS3 hdd. I'm sure you can find how much of your PS3's storage is being used up in the settings somewhere, and I think the backup size is usually a bit smaller than that value.

^^^^Thanks guy i will give it a look, pretty certain i have enough though as i've hardly saved anything onto my PS3, just saved data for Dead Space and GTA IV (which i don't want to lose).

Could the reason for the backup error be corrupted data? How would i fix that if it were the problem? Full restore?

And another thing, is there any way of restoring everything without deleting everything on my PS3?

Sorry about the questions i can be abit of an annoying b!tch sometimes. Just want everything to be safe when my PS3 dies.

Go to your settings in xmb, then "system settings" then "system information". That will tell you how much GB you're using so far on the HDD.

As for your problem, also under system settings there is an option called "restore default settings". try that, (you won't lose any data) Though you will lose all book marked sites in the browser.

Not a sure fix, though something to try.

^^^Ok i just tried that. It says 32GB/55GB. So i guess its saying i've used 23GB on my PS3? In that case my USB is in fact too small to fit everything on it which could be the cause of the error?

Correct me if i am wrong haha.

Thanks anyway for the suggestions posters above. It all helps.

you can go into the saved data folder in your games column of the XMB and back up each save manually by pressing triangle and selecting copy. its more time consuming but a much more foolproof way of backing up save data. plus that way the size of the USB stick wont come into play as the save data it self is quite small.

Yup! I was going to suggest that. Though I thought Flick wanted to back up everything in one hit. What longarms has mentioned will work for photos, music, movies, game saves etc.. Press triangle over the file/icon then copy.

Takes time, though you can back up what you really need. Game saves are most important and any pics you may lose.

Yeah i tried that to begin with for some of my saved data, just copied a few of them onto a USB and transferred them to a friends PS3 but the games wouldn't load the save data because it wasnt from the same user.

That is when people started to say a full backup would work for everything. Which is why i am trying to do it now.
