That is, when the film is transferred onto a disc, its resolution would be 1080p, however back in those days due to technology people can't directly transfer 100% of the PQ and sound of the film onto portable mediums. Now they can put EVERYTHING they filmed (pure sound and PQ) onto discs.
The only downside is that the PQ of movies 20 years ago on BR won't look as good as the PQ of movies today, this is due to the advancement of lenses and colour reproduction technology.
