Just going to buy an external HDD so I can use it for the PS3 and PC to store my MP3s and Videos etc. Any suggestions to a good large external HDD. I'm also keen to hear from you all on the dummies guide to setting up the right directory structure so the PS3 can recognise the files? Many thanks in advance.

Just make sure it's FAT32 format. The files don't nessicarily need to be filed correctly, but if their not you just need to access them with the triangle button instead of X.

Even if its not FAT32 you can always format it to FAT32.

Yeah its good to organize your stuff by putting them in there respective folders, so that when you open your ps3, you access all your videos under VIDEO.
But you can also just press the triangle button and select display all to view all your files.
sorry for the double post

We'll take music for example. If you place your music in X:\MUSIC\, then the PS3 will find the files if you press X when the HDD is highlighted.
If you didn't place the music files in X:\MUSIC\, you will need to press Triangle when the HDD is highlighted, and click on "Display All". Then your music will appear in a list.

Is it new? If so, it's usually already FAT32.

If however you want to organize your movies or songs into catagoires (because you've got so damn many) then you can put them into whatever file you wish. For example you can dump most of your movies into one file and the new releases you've yet to watch in another for easier finding.

Personally I'd suggest avoiding an external hard drive which requires an external power source (power point).

Any HDD that is formatted with the FAT32 system WILL NOT be able to have individual files over 4GB

i use TVersity on my PC with my Xbox360 (i guess PS3 would be the same) to act as a media server and it's working great. Can download and watch 4GB .mkv files of HD content without any problems. It looks great, and HDD file system is irrelevant.
