Sony are the owners of the blu-ray format, so if they want region free blu-rays, they'll just make the disc's region free, not the PS3.

once again its unlikely that divx would be included. as they would have to buy the rights from divx and get it all set up and theres not much insentive for them to do it. they wont get a return on it. but you never know they could supirse us all

damn, even the cheap DVD playes / recorders have DIVX now, I was hoping PS3 would get it. So since my region free and divx firmware updates have been squished, what can I look forward to now? maybe a firmware update allowing games to be installed on a external hard drive or something along these lines for the future. Anyone got any other things??

region coding has everything to do with the writer of the disc, not Sony themselves. Sony encouraged region coding and therefore most companies do it. They have even made it compulsory. But I'm sure we will see region-free BD titles eventually, just like some DVD's are region free.
