Warhawk - 3/10

For all you who don't know, Warhawk is an exclusively multiplayer 3rd person shooter offering dedicated servers and plane combat on a 16 vs 16 scale.

Let this be clear, I am not stingy. I usually never refund games, especially those bought from a "bin". But this game prompted me to swiftly return to the store and get rid of it like herpes growing on a porn star.

You see its claims of multiplayer and vehicle combat. (Like battlefield 2) When you join a server, you find any actual rifle or gun you pick up is useless due to the abundance of vehicles, which are also made useless by the abundance of Warhawks (plane things). Unless you are in a warwhore there is no chance of survival, even when I did manage to get in 1, the experience was short lived when 3 other people quickly found me to be a sitting duck. I thought ok, so it has some flaws but what doesn't.

The 32 player multiplayer was one of the points on which i decided to buy this game. But while it boasts 32 player servers, it was hard to find one that was full. Even when I did join one with 30 players, the lag was intense and made the whole experience a monotonous deathfest.

I eventually opted for one of the servers with less players. The big open worlds, combined with slow logistics makes the game a drag. You spend your time walking from 1 side to another only to get killed by some top gun in a warwhore, which seemed the only feasible way to traveling.

After a while I realized my 18 player server offered me nothing better then my COD 4 multiplayer. In fact it offered me nothing. Stealth and tactics are thrown out the window as people stick out like a sore thumb with war whores constantly bombarding spawn points.

Thankfully I did get to try six-axis controls of the warwhore, which resulted in my crashing into random bits of scenery due to their extreme lack of sensitivity and delay. Any onlooker will think you are mentally delayed while you shake and vigorously move your controller hoping your warhawk will respond. All is but not lost, as this feature can be turned off. While turning this off made me feel like I was missing out on part of the game I couldn't justify expending too much energy only to have my pilot suicide into the ground.

If you still plan on buying this game despite the run and gun gameplay far superior to any action game on PS3 game at the moment please note you will need to have a connection of at least ADSL2 or Cable speeds. With these technologies being unavailable in my area I was shocked to see only a handful of servers with under 100 ping on my 1.5mb connection. I am quite able to play COD4 online with any group of Australians and get a very playable ping.

That all being said, there really was no redeeming features. The feature this game boasts the most, the warhawks, weren't fun to fly due to poor control and pro players, 3rd person combat was kind of lame, the controls were designed by someone with schizophrenia and it boasted no features to keep me playing apart from getting in a warwhore again to try and do aerial maneuvers.

Until battlefield bad company comes out I will stick with COD4 for my at multi player FPS experience.
