PS3 News \ 160GB PS3 Announced by Sony

During their press conference at Leipzig Sony announced that a new upgraded 160GB version of the PlayStation 3 will be released on the 31st of August in Europe. Besides the increased HDD the new model will feature identical specifications to the current 80GB model.

The 160GB PS3 will come bundled with approximately €70 worth of downloadable content. The super sized PS3 will set you back €449 (AUD $758) in Europe. US owners will see the console bundled with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, a PSN voucher for PAIN and a DualShock 3 controller, for the price of US$499.99. Currently there is no news on an Australian release, who only just received official word from Sony of the 80GB model launching in the region on August 28.

Hopefully thats not entirely true. I'd like to see if they've included the smaller 45nm Cell chip (down from 65nm) and smaller 65nm RSX (down from 90nm) which were announced Feb '08 & Nov '07 respectively

If they were included then it would mean that the PS3 would only consume ~80 watts of power compared to 130w - 40GB & 200w - 60GB

Shouldn't they do what the Xbox 360 does with Arcade/Pro/Elite?

Wouldn't that capture every 'segment' of the market?

Those who don't need this, gets the Arcade.

Those just uses the basics, use Pro.

Those who want EVERYTHING (e.g. me) gets Elite ...

Or does Sony not want such a "complex and confusing system"?



I though this was their initial plan when they first launched but apparently not, if they didn't want such a complex system then they shouldn't have discontinued and released new models this much.
