Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - 9/10
Do you like shooting people? Do you like blowing things up in tanks? Like blowing stuff up in general? Then by George this is the game for you! Battlefield: Bad Company 2 combines a fun and interesting singleplayer mode with a team-coordinated and amazing multiplayer/online mode to create the ultimate first-person shooter.
EA and DICE have once again combined to put together one of the most anticipated games to be released over the past few years. After the success of the previous title, Battlefield: Bad Company, DICE have once again, as the cover art says, defined online warfare.
Whilst the hype behind the game is mainly focused on the multiplayer area the single-player mode of the game doesn't fail to impress. The story gives players a decent 7-10 hours of solid gaming where you will make your way from the lush jungles of Bolivia to the coldest peaks of the Andes Mountains. The three difficulty levels deliver a precise difference whether you're a newcomer to the genre or you've been playing games since you can remember you will be tested at some stage of the story. Along with loveable characters that you will be protecting with your gaming life, Bad Company 2 delivers one of the premier single-player modes around for first-person shooter video games.
The destruction side of the game can be breathtaking seeing a building collapsing just because you've shot at it a dozen times with your tank. It can save you time and help you clock up a few extra kills by taking down a buliding with 10 enemies in it than having to precisely gun down each and every one of them. If an enemy is shooting at you and decides to take cover, instead of waiting for them to pop their head out and hope they dont get you why not just take out their cover and take them down at the same down. Not only is destroying things fun, it is a vital part of playing and dominating the game.
The visual components are stunning to the eye and you will be in awe as you wonder wether or not you are controlling Marlowe or watching a movie. Yes there is the occasional blur or two and the odd looking building rubble here and there but it barely alters the game experience and the whole feeling is still just as real.
The audio department of the game is first class and is emphasised by the use of Dolby Digital. With great voice work and an original score the sound is just another area developed well by DICE. Listening to Sweets and Hags argue will take you back to when you and your brother used to argue over pointless topics. Each character has their own personality and the voice work adds to that personality.
Yes the single-player mode is good but as soon as you start playing the multi-player side of the game you will forget your street name. The only thing plaguing your mind will be whether or not everyone in your squad is alright and if the enemy you just killed saw what a good kill it was. Players will choose between 4 different classes, assault, engineer, medic and recon. Each class includes a primary weapon and a gadget or two unqie to that class with many more unlocked after levelling up. It isn't MAG but 24 players may still compete in one round in well-sized maps where you aren't bumping into an enemy or team-mate every corner or spending ten minutes just to get your first kill.
The multi-player maps are just as good as those in single-player with various environments such as desert and jungle maps based in South America to the more mountainous and snowy areas of Russia.
Bad Company 2 also featuers 15 different vehicles ranging from the chopper to the tank so you wont neccessarily need to be burning those calories running to your enemies. Along with the choppers and tanks the game includes 4 man cars, 2 man quad bikes, two man boats and a UAV helicopter capable of blowing up enemy tanks, just to name a few.
The game features 4 different multi-player game modes. In rush players will either be defending or attacking two target stations in a certain area. Once the two targets have been destroyed the defending team will have to drop back to another expanded area on the map to defend another two stations while the attacking team will have to move up and continue the trend. Conquest involves 3 flags which must be kept in control of until the enemy respawn count runs out. Squad Deathmatch includes 4 different squads of 4 killing each other off until one squad reaches 50 kills. Then finally there is squad rush where players compete in a game of rush assigned to a 4 man squad who team up with another squad of 4 to defend or attack the targets being held by an opposing team of 2 4 man squads.
All in all Battlefield: Bad Company 2 provides gamers with one of the finest first-person shooters in an era where the genre is at it's peak with many other well selling titles around. No matter what your style of games once you get your hands on Bad Company 2 it will keep you coming back.
Gameplay 9.5/10 - With a realistic battlefield environment in the multi-player aspect killing and destroying has never been so fun.
Sound 10/10 - First class audio with amazing voice and score work.
Graphics 9.5/10 - Stunning visuals with real looking characters despite the odd jumping nerves after death.
Overall 9.5/10 - A fine effort by EA and DICE to create what should be one of the best first-person shooters for some time to come.
