Eye of Judgement Reviews \ Detail

Eye of Judgment... - 9/10

Introduction:

For anyone who has played other card games (Magic, Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh, etc) you would already know what the main idea of this game is... except, you can use the cards to play the game with creatures and spells being brought to life by your very own playstation 3 through an innovative use of the Eye!

Gameplay:

Setup
Game is played on a 3x3 grid (on a supplied mat) with a PSEye sitting in a provided stand (some assmebly required) looking down onto the playing field. Setting this up is extremely easy and easy-to-follow instructions are provided in the game manual and on the game disc (in form of videos). After that it's as easy plugging in the PSEye into a USB at the front of PS3, getting out your deck of cards (1 Starter Pack + 1 Booster Pack provided with game), setting up some lighting (if needed) and you're ready to go!

Quick Rules & Guidelines
Someone said (in reference to this game) that it's like a combination of Magic CCG & Star Wars Holo-Chess. It's a bit like that:
- 3x3 grid, must be in control of 5 squares to win the round.
- Damage on creatures is permanent (as in they don't heal at the start of every turn)
- 5 total elements: fire vs water/ice, wood vs earth & biolith (think of em as machines).
- various ways to destroy your opponents' creatures and gain mana...

That about sums it up, the rest is explained better in game...

Single Player
First of all... there is no story mode as such. All you can do offline is play various matches (player vs player / player vs comp / comp vs comp) under various conditions (field type, length of turn, etc), examine your cards in card viewer (which shows the flavor text as well as a little bit about the world this game is in and where the card is based in), build decks and play a small game of creature vs creature called Judgment.... that's about it! It loses a point as it could have had SOME kind of Story? Maybe in an extra set?

Multiplayer
Now this is where this game shines, you no longer need to go to geeky card shops to play cards vs people! Best of all, it's free! All you need is "confirm" to the ps3 that you own each card in your deck by leeting the eye scan em, and you're off! The game doesn't display opponents eye image on your screen and tells you what cards you draw from your deck (to prevent cheating) and is great fun!

Graphics

This is another department where this little gem shines once again! Everything from the fantastic intro to all the animations on monsters, fields, attacks is done extremely well and rendered up to 1080i (& 720p). Overall the interface is not too cluttered and you can always get more info on anything by using the "status" card to display the lowdown on the field overall or a specific creature.

Sound & Music

Well this you'll either hate or like. Sounds are all there as they should be, even voices for some creature attacks is a nice touch ("Now is when you DIE!" is one of my favs so far), but the music is rock... constant rock... definitely made this reviewer wish once more for that in-game XMB access...

Overall:

If you like card games, and using your grey matter a bit... as well as innovation that ACTUALLY WORKS! Then buy this NOW (don't walk, run)... if none of above sounds like your cup of tea, then walk past, but know you'd be walking away from one of the best games out on the platform at the moment!

Boosters & Theme Decks (cont...)

Theme decks are pre-built packs, built within the game rule framework but generally concentrate on a particular aspect, usually by 'colour' or 'team'. In the case of Eye of Judgment, most of the uncommon and rare creature cards in a theme deck will be of one 'team'. Included with each Theme deck is a booklet which lists not only the team 'creatures' but a checklist for the entire collection, known as the Biolith Scourge

I have a few crappy photos of the card packs which I took of the sets I bought from Singapore (none available around Rockingham W.A.) which I'll post if anyone is interested.

Boosters & Theme Decks

What I didn't have time or space to write below was that there are booster packs and theme decks available.

These "work" in pretty much the same way as regular CCGs (in fact, in theory you CAN play with the cards without the PS3 but the PS3 makes for a much fairer rules arbitrator!).

"Boosters" are a pack of eight random cards, consisting of the usual "collectable" mix of Common, Uncommon, and Rare cards.
For those who've never bothered understanding collectible-lingo, I'll try to use RTS (CnC) terms to give you an idea how the work.
Commons equate to your Rifleman or Grenadier units, cheap in terms of points cost and plentiful.
Uncommons kind of equate to your next-level units, say a basic tank, more expensive to use, less plentiful than commons.
Rares are like the Special Forces dudes, they cost a bit to produce, you can't have too many, and they do a ship-load of damage.
The games rules govern how many of each you have in a 30-card deck and the production runs of each type are set to ensure that as the 'power' increases, the availability decreases.

Nice review, SB, and the first I've seen rated above 7. It's great to see how this game is ranked when reviewed by someone who actually gets the strategy of card games (think RTS, TBS, or even RPG but with less "clicky-clicky"). Don't get me wrong, I love my FPSs and my RTSs, and occassionally some sports games but most "professional" reviewers can't seem to make that cross-genre leap that this game provides and rate it truly accordingly. I read one reviewer bemoaning that "it doesn't have a single-player campaign mode"... ummm... wtf man, it's a c-a-r-d game? If by that he meant that there's no end-of-level boss to beat or no nazi-infested gun emplacement to knock-out single handedly, then yeah, there's no campaign mode. What he did miss was that you have to beat the PS3 using the standard deck at three levels of difficulty before trying to beat the PS3 with your own custom-deck (for "deck", think "team"+"weapons"). It might no be "campaign" but there IS a challenge there. If this game doesn't sound like your thing, that's cool but if you have a mate who's got it, give it a try and get that grey-matter going! da_Bear
