My apologies if this has already been raised, but I couldn't find the search function in this forum.

I've just recently bought a PS3 and now will be getting a HD TV to match up with it. I love the Sony Bravia range, but want to know with their 8ms response rate, is that an issue with the PS3 with regards to ghosting? Particularly with FPS games? Will getting the 120hz models (X-Series) eliminate the problem, or do the 60hz models have no issue either?

What response rate should I try to get below, or is doesn't that matter these days as the top brands it's not an issue?

Many thanks in advance for your advice.

Basically 100Hz (we don't have 120Hz here, it's only for the NTSC region) takes the usual 50Hz and just make a duplicate of those frames.

All BRAVIAs have an 8ms response time, this shouldn't be an issue for playing fast-paced games. However, you will notice a significance difference when watching movies or watching sports, or viewing a "panning" motion on the LCD, compared to plasmas.

I have an old X and my brother's got the new X, basically playing games on both TV is a pleasant experience, so I'm sure you will be fine

Oh yes, Sony is one of the top brands of LCD TVs, so they won't disappoint, since they market the PS3 with their BRAVIA Xs - does that make any sense?

Thanks Entice. When you say significant difference, are you saying that the lower spec (50Hz) TV's will exhibit some ghosting, whereas the 100Hz won't?

I'm living in Malaysia at the moment, and the Sony X's here are advertised as 120Hz. As the PS3 is region free, I'm guessing this won't be an issue when I move back to Brisbane. Is this correct?

Region free for PS3 games but that's it.

But there will be no problems between the TV and the PS3 though.

I have no problem with any of my ps3 games with the current bravia X series. But I do have a problem when I connect my PC to the bravia to play couterstrike : source.

Do seems to have a little bit of ghosting, which made me nauseas after a while, which did not ever happened when I play on on my Dell monitor. But it looks great though, with big screen, and I did get more headshot using Bravia as the opponent's heads are significantly bigger, haha...

OK, so you're all saying that games are great on the Bravia X, but what about watching TV, such as sports? Any ghosting to be found there?

120hz is for 24p (5:5 pulldown)

PS3s outputs 60hz in HD (2:2)

And how about watching sports on television? Will a Bravia X be found to be wanting in terms of ghosting?

I have one thing to say. Why would you buy a PS3 and then a Bravia, The bravia X series comes with a free PS3...

I just bought one

Congratulations, you've done well.

I live in Malaysia, where Sony TV's are ridiculously more expensive than back home. For example, a W series 40" 50Hz HD Bravia is around $3100 AUD up here.

What does that have to do with the fact that PS3's come free with the Bravia you want to buy?

I wasn't aware of the free offer when I bought the PS3. Plus I really wasn't thinking of getting a new TV when I bought the PS3. However, having seen what it can do on a mate's HD TV I'm all for getting one now.

OK, let's move past your implication I'm stupid, and talk about how the Bravias go regarding normal TV watching and fast moving/panning sports.

you ask him a question, then chop him down for answering it?

what does getting a free ps3 with your bravia have to do with the OP, Sony Bravias response rate?

Thanks for the support Jeffie. Greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all for their responses. It's given me peace of mind knowing that I'm on the right track with looking at the Bravias.

Bravias have an 8ms reponse. My PC monitor has heaps of ghosting and it's 5ms response (which is why i prefer Plasma). I work selling and installing HDTVs for a living so i know whats what. I also know that it 100% depends on your size. 42"+ go for Plasma, 40" and less go LCD. If you want to go LCD, the Bravia is definatly the way to go, or even one of these: panasonic.com.au/ For plasma, go for Panasonic 100% of the way. Panasonic make excellent 100hz Plasma and LCD displays and are the current industry leaders in television (except maybe Pioneer TV's). Check out the panasonic australian website and have a look through thier LCD and Plasma TVs. Anything with a model number that ends in 700A means Full HD and 100hz goodness.

Best 42" Screen: panasonic.com.au/

It all depends on the size of TV you want and budget, but any Panasonic TV thats ends with 700A in the model is the way to go.

100hz is vertually useless when films are recorded in 24fps.. so i wouldnt even consider 100hz at all.

Cool, thanks. What about for games though, as they run up to 60fps?

Incorrect.

120Hz = 120 fps

24fps = 24Hz

putts113, be careful with plasmas as they will get screen burn ins when you play a lot of video games.

If you want a TV mainly for gaming, go for LCD, if you're a movie fanatic or a sports freak, get plasma.

Hi all

I dont own a Bravia, but many of my friends do (bought because of the free ps3 promotion) and in all honesty, eventhough there are many claimed features of the bravia line that are meant to eliminate/cope with motion blur (e.g. motion flow) i still find that theres a lot of ghosting.. thus, I wasn't impressed by the Bravia tv's (despite what some fanboys and salesmen say).. I agree that the PQ is great, BUT in fast frames, the image gets all blurry, and this is undoubtedly due to the sluggish 8ms response (which, imo, is significantly higher than most panels which are at 5 ms, or some even 3 ms now)..

What do you guys think?

Welcome to the site Lesane, hope you enjoy your time here mate. I agree, going by my experience, some of my mates werent to keen with some of the Bravias due to the very same reason you mentioned. I personally dont own a Bravia i ended up going Panasonic, and that TV does enough for me

8ms is a little slow - i thought the new batch of Sony LCD were faster than that?????? you should be looking at around 6ms at least....

I have a Bravia 40" X series and I don't see any ghosting at all in gaming or watching movies. It's probably worth to note that you may need to calibrate your Bravia before you can get its full advantage. For example, if you're using the standard picture preset (like vivid/standard) you won't be able to display the full hd resolution.
My suggestion is if you're going for LCD go for Bravia and if you like plasma go for Panasonic. Note that Panasonic does not support 24p film mode and it may have burn-in problem if you like to game on it, otherwise it is an excellent display. While the Bravia may have clouding problems (under extreme dark lighting).

Sony Bravia can speed up Response Rate in game mode or set by user the defaults rate is 8ms but can go to 6ms to 2ms GTG= Grey To Grey. But the BTW=Black to White is the response time that takes the longest time, hence the slower time of 16ms with the GTG of 6ms
