I read this morning on a US Blu Ray forum that a COD 4 patch was released today. I don't have the game so can't verify, but I did look around the web and found other people saying the same.
Apparently it should fix the server selection issue.

Just went and updated and played. Haven't been on in a couple of months and my god! The match making is super fast and there is no lag at all (I was playing against americans).
Very nice work IW for cleaning it up. Still the best online game

Seriously!!? Its had that dramatic an effect? Must get home and get the patch d/loaded ASAP 
Had some Yankie d*ck laugh at me over the mic the other day as he saw me try and shoot him point blank to no avail (he then turned an knifed me) but I was 1 bar - he was 4, so not fair!!! I'll be huntin' that mo'fo down for a rematch, thats for sure. Hoo-Ha.

I hope so, because it was really confusing, it made it hard to see who was on your team or not, espesicllay if they had their name coloured red
