Hey guys and gals.......has this ever happened to anyone else before......while playing COD4 tonight the game lost all sound and then eventually froze after the deathmatch completed and then my system would no longer read disks. Everything else works fine, i can play demos and stuff saved on the HDD but it just wont read disks, not even cds or dvds, so its not just games.
any syggestions? 
can admin update the post header to say PS3 and not PS# (thanks)

Sounds to me like your cd drive has crapped itself. Hope it's still under warranty.

Yeah, looks like the blu-ray drive is cactus, does it not read any other disks?

Well it hasn’t happened to me but I have heard this same exact story many times before on these forums. Basically your PS3's optical drive's laser has just died 
.
You now have to call Sony and organize for them to fix it.
There number is 1300365911
How long have you had your PS3? as it has a 1 year warranty and they will fix this for free if you got it less than a year ago.

bought it in July 2007, so i'm within the warranty period thankfully.
i am a bit worried as to why the laser died? i've had to hard power down my unit a few times because the system froze, could this have damaged it?
suggestions??

No its just a fault with the components. Nothing you would have done would have made this happen.

of all the random things for me to get lucky i choose to get the unit that has the faulty laser.......why didn't i pick the lucky lotto numbers instead?
so i guess this means 2 weeks to 2 months out waiting on my ps3 to come back from repairs (this is what i gather is the waiting time from previous posts)

I played team fortress 2 alot and it froze occasionally and i had to reset console.Whenever i put a disk in it shows the load icon in top right corner, but it doesn't load.
Sony said it will take 15-20 working days for me (mon-fri) to get it back.

Bummer eh. Hope mine doesn't do that. I take care of mine alot. Clean inside and polish outside frequently.

As apposed to Xbox? Or should I come down to your level and say "GayBox" in the hopes you will understand? I myself have had to replace the Xbox twice since buying 6 months ago, while my PS3 has remained solid and consistent in its performance.
My Xbox still sounds like a blender when powered on. If only they had built a quality machine like Sony, instead of rushing it to market.

I bought mine in June 2007 and probably 2-3 months ago it started freezing once a week then twice a week and then once a day until it started loosing its sounds and then freezing.
It eventually wouldnt play any bluray discs but would still play PS2 games, i spoke to sony and they said send it back(which i sent off on the 3rd april)
If the machine would actually recognise that it had a PS3 game inside i could play it for about 5 minutes then it shuts off and comes up with a Disc Read Error 80010514

You may have bad luck on Xbox 360 cause i have had mine for nearly 2 years and mine is still in a awesome condition...like brand new

But the facts are that the failure rate of the 360 is much higher than that of the PS3 or Wii.
Warranty provider reports have put it as almost %30 of Xbox consoles sold. Where as the PS3 is reported as being less the %1... that is an extraordinary margin, and for the price of a 360, we as consumers deserve better.

So it was a 60gb? Judging by the date you bought it? Im just a bit cautious because i have a launch day 60gb and its now out of warranty It seems to be the 40gb that fails more, but over the last week or so ive read about a few 60gbs with the same trouble.

Mine is a 60gb... i put it thru a fair few hours thou... probably more hours than the average gamer.... how often is yourz on/playin???

Mate, those 'facts' you talk of from that article are a year old. You need to take into consideration that the 360 has been around a year longer than the PS3. I reckon if you look at the failure rates today, then the PS3 won't be looking as good. How can you go on about the 'build quality' of the PS3 over the 360, when these disk errors are happening everywhere you turn.
If the laser is only getting a life span of somewhere in the region of 10-12 months, then they're all going to start happening around now.
This is going to be Sony's RRoD equivalent. Let's see if they have the balls to offer those console owners a 3 year warranty like MS did. My mates PS3 died like this three weeks out of warranty, and sony don't want to know. A $1000 on something with great build quality that lasts a year?? Maybe the $399 Arcade 360 is looking a better option if the $700 PS3 is just as likely to go kaboom!

yeh most of tha time when i play cod4 or anything else i go for 5-8hrs no stop and thats atleast 4-5 times a week... i wasnt that surprised that it happened... even if its still under warranty next time thou, im gona get the local mod shop to repair it..theres no way ill be waitin for sony to sort it out again

Dude, Don't worry about it so much, get the most out of your system don't be scared its going to break because 99% the systems will be fine. EVEN if it did break and it's out of warranty I'm sure it wouldn't cost that much to get fixed... any one know?
