Forum Games \ [Debate] Should Gamers Have To Pay For Downloadable Content?

well firstly its a way for them to suck money out of you, like paying for xbox live..... (dont get me started on xbox) but every one would love for things to be free but they are a busness and that need to make money some how. secondly what about for example cod4. people get paid to make the game and once thats done thats it theres no more they have to pay except for a small amount of royalitys, then they make the cod4 map pack AFTER the final product is finished. that means that they have to pay people to make the actual maps and also make then playable costing them more money. they cant make money out of no where so thay charge the consumer (you) a small fee to pay the people and make a profit

There are several instances that can swing either way with this debate.
1. The price of the DLC.
2. The quality.
3. Exactly what the content is.
4. The game itself, a full shelved title or online store mini game?
Most likely a marketing ploy by publishers, developers may not have had time to fit all the content in or enough disc space.
You shouldn't have to pay for extra maps and weapons for full titles. Mini games i understand for eg. Pain. <<Thats my opinion.
But in the eyes of a publisher they KNOW people WILL buy them so why the hell not?

I reckon that if its something like map packs then yes, but paying to download demos is out of the question.

Thats right, it seems like their making a profit on a game that they feel arn't going to make much of a profit on it's own but alot of the time they just get greedy. There is now more money being flung around the games industry than there is in hollywood
But are there any particular games you are pointing at Skua?

I think some map packs should be free as not everyone can buy them etc.

Hell no! It should be included in the price of the game, we already pay too much.

I agree with iddqd mostly because just a map pack or just a few minor changes doesn't justify a price tag 10% of the original rrp$ ,and ive noticed that they tend to divide groups of players online that don't or do have extra content you'll find a good example of this playing warhawk.

I totally agree with $10 for a warhawk addon that adds vehicles, weapons, and several maps (well.. several new layouts at least)
but $1.75 for a new Everybody's golf or Bowling character?
$4.95 one new car in NFS:Pro Street?
$7 for new music in Ridge Racer 7? $7 FOR MUSIC?!

Obviously though enough effort has to be put into the content to be worthwhile paying to get it. Some stuff should be for free, and some of it is. But at the same time other stuff should be paid for. Hey there people who worked to actually make the content, shouldn't these people deserve to be paid? Should they get nothing for stuff they worked on because we believe it should be free?

It depends on the price, size and type of the DLC.
Things that are already in the game or should be in the game should be free, eg characters in pain. But any thing that has taken devs extra time to make like expansion packs, new maps etc should have a fee. What really annoys me is when certain devs(coughEAcough) charge for stuff that should be already in the game or for free.

Developer's need to make money from DLC, and with no profit there is going to be little incentive for them to expend time and money to create a extended experience for the user.
So yes, As long as the price remains reasonable, I do not mind paying for extra content. It's pretty much a necessity if we want to keep DLC alive.

i dont mind paying for dlc when its map packs or some sort of decent add on months after the game has come out (exception to the rule is rckand an gutar hero)
what sh!ts me is when companys like EA an 2K purposely leave content out of the game only to have it appear on the xbl marketplace or psn a week after the game comes out
in perticular ea's unlock all weapons or cars an tracks or 110% golfer etc or 2k's replays for its 2k7\2k8 series something that could easily be put in the game to begin with
guess what ! ...
they are doing it with battlefield bad company as well some weapons you can only unlock after purchusing them of xlmp or psn
or buying the gold edition of the game ($20 more)
its just greed an xploiting idiot gamers who must have an buy everything
EDIT : no wait to be truthful i hate paying for it coming from pc gaming itsh!ts me to tears that you have to pay for stuff including xboxlive when it should be fkin free an dont even bring up the windows gold live crap lol

What a fine business move it would be to have free downloads or even just one free per month to get people A. onto a particular type of system by giving off a 'good mate' image to gamers. B. get people into downloading content (i have personally not purchased any content online nor intend to however a free one might lure me into seeing what i am missing).

Like in the song "the best things in life are free". But we are already pay IMHO a little to much for new release games(but thats another debate).
Why not add a unique code in the games package that entitles the buyer to one free dlc for the game. This might curb piracy and make the game a little more appealing.

hmmm... this a tough one. game devolpers will eventually hae their most popular games sold to everyone. like R6 vegas, and all that so they need the money for the new things. i dont like paying 4 it but i guess it worth it.

Nobody forces us to pay for games. If you want something you pay for it...simple! It's worked this way for millennia. Sony et al are not philanthropic entities created to ensure our happiness by providing us with free goodies out of some "magical bottomless pit of money"...they are businesses. They exist to provide a product or service at the cheapest cost (to them). The fact the PS3 store etc is free is good PR. The fact you have to pay for some content is LIFE!

Extra Content wouldn't be free for the companies to make, so they should get some profit out of it.

Yes. And if YOU had something you put effort, money etc into making would you give it away, or expect to be reimbursed? If you knew you would get nothing you wouldn't bother making it. If the world was like this we would all still be living in caves...or North Korea.
