Top 20 Playstation Games

The Playstation 3 gaming library is probably one of the best in the history of gaming. Titles like Bioshock, MGS4, Oblivion, The Orange Box and Killzone 2 all helped the PS3 develop its core gaming audience, with a dedicated online community that no other competitor can even come close to in terms of content and accessibility.

Coming up with the top 20 Playstation 3 games of all-time (up to now) was a very difficult task. The truth is that there are probably 50 or so titles that could very easily fit in to the top 20. The differences in quality between the bottom five or so in the top 20 and the next 10 that could have been in the list are near to zero. The top of the list was the easy part, but as we got further down, coming up with a fair list that we believed the general gaming public would also agree with was tough. We don't expect all of you to agree with the list and we know we're going to see plenty of "where is this game" or "why did you include that game".

What we wanted to achieve with this list is a list that definitively provides you with the games that are absolute must-haves for the Playstation 3. They aren't the only must-haves, but rather the best of the best (at least we think they are). There are some games that we absolutely hated not including in the list and we understand and appreciate that some of you might get a bit angry at it. But that's why we have the forums and comment sections - so that you can comment, debate, argue and discuss your own lists and our list.

After you've read the list, head on over to our official thread to discuss the list and tell us your top 20 XBOX 360 games.

Playstation - Top 20 Games

20. Rockband

Sure it may have come out obscenely late here, and it’s in stiff competition with the new kid on the block, Guitar Hero World Tour, but you simply cannot go past it’s impressive suite of DLC on offer. If you want a game that is more about the music than competition, and has more tunes than you can throw a snare at, Rock Band is the game for you.

19. Midnight Club Los Angeles

A great racer that will go down as one of the best street-racing titles of all time. A true beast of a game, with a near-perfect rendition of Los Angeles.

What we said in our review

Midnight Club Los Angeles is a fantastic street-racing title. It offers an amazing number of races, all varying in difficulty and style, the car customisation options are aplenty, the opponent AI is top notch and very intelligent, the online multiplayer is great fun and the presentation is fantastic. Most importantly, the city actually feels and looks like Los Angeles.

18. Singstar

Who would have thought something as simple as karaoke could set the world on fire when it came to gaming consoles. Singstar has been responsible for many drunken party nights, for console sales, and is a staple in every Playstation owners collection. Get it and invite your friends around today!

17. Resident Evil 5

The Resident Evil franchise will always be at home on a Playstation console. Regardless that this title has now gone cross-platform, Resident Evil 5 still offers a top notch, pants wettingly good experience on the PS3.

What we said in our review

Resident Evil 5 is a great action romp. The basic gameplay fundamentals remain from RE4, but it still has enough positives to classify as a worthy title. The new inventory system is great and the co-op implementation is good for the most part. The overall presentation is superb, being not only the best in the RE franchise but one of the best this generation. While RE5 hasn’t reinvented the third-person action title, it maintains many of the great RE qualities we’ve all come to love while implementing particular new aspects and evolving into a highly enjoyable action title.

16. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare won a whole bunch of awards and owned the top spot on the XBOX Live leaderboards for months. With World at War, we don't expect it to be quite as successful, but it's still an amazing title that is worth checking out.

If you want a new FPS with a fantastic online multiplayer experience and enjoyable single-play mode with World War II elements, check out World at War.

What we said in our review

Call of Duty: World at War, surprisingly, lives up to its predecessor. It loses a few points for lack of originality and while it doesn’t have the same freshness that Call of Duty 4 had, it’s ability to throw gamers into WWII battles that haven’t yet been realised in a game is encouraging. The gameplay is amazingly solid, the audio and graphical presentation is top-notice and the multiplayer experience is just as fantastic.

15. Heavenly Sword

Heavenly Sword is in the hack and slash category such as God Of War. It featured breathtaking graphics, stunning landscapes, and a half decent story. With great combos, literally hundreds of enemies to hack and slash your way through and a great orchestral sound track, even thought it’s ridiculously short, Heavenly Sword deserves to be in your collection.

14. Resistance Fall of Man

Resistence Fall of Man was a bold move by Insomiac Games, up until that point they were famous for the Ratchet and Clank series, and then they come out of the gates with a first person shooter as a launch title for the PS3. Seems like the gamble paid off. While it’s seriously lacking some elements, especially if you have got the second title, Resistence is still a formidable title, and an important one for PS3 owners.

13. Pure

Who ever though ATV Quad Bikes could be so messy and oh so beautiful. Disney Interactive’s PURE brings us to the gritty world of Quad Bike racing. Featuring some unbelieveable characters, over the top stunts, fast and furious racing and one of the most customizable ride options available, this is the offroad racer to buy.

What we said in our review

Overall, Pure is filled with thrills, spills and some insane off-road racing action. The World Tour offers plenty of action for the single-player gamer with a lengthy mode and impressive array of bike customisation option. Multiplayer is great fun with up to 15 of your friends and while there isn’t an abundance of different game modes, Pure offers plenty with what it’s got.

12. Folklore

One of the first of it’s kind on the shiny black behemoth and still one of the best, Folklore showed us a world of fantasty, adventure, and provided us with the ability to literally eat our enemies souls, right from their bodies! Folklore is a decent title, that while suffers from some poor design choices, still offers a worth while experience for fans of the genre.

11. Mirrors Edge

There seems to be this sudden obsession with vampires and zombies in modern-day media. There have been over a dozen zombie flicks this decade, as well as two amazing zombie titles on XBOX 360.

Mirrors Edge was a bold new franchise that would show us that there can be more to first person games. Featuring some of the coolest city locations, and fast and ferocious running, jumping and climbing and even a half decent storyline. Sure it also features some serious flaws, but I think it’s an important title that deserves a spot in your collection.

What we said in our review

Mirror’s Edge is as difficult to rate as it is different from every other game this generation. It offers an original first-person experience with a fantastic plot, yet has story-telling techniques that don’t deliver. You can’t help but feel that Mirror’s Edge is the beginning of an all-new franchise and hopefully an all-new genre. The gameplay is original, challenging yet strangely intriguing. You’ll die a lot, but that’s because the game needs you to perfect it to progress. Overall, it’s a game that should be experienced, even with its extremely short single-player.

10. Dead Space

It’s not every day a totally new survival horror franchise is launched, and it certainly isn’t very often that a new franchise is executed so well first time it’s let out to the masses. Dead Space features some of the most memorable and freakiest moments this generation. If you want to get scared, this game is for you.

What we said in our review

Dead Space brings back the survival horror genre from the dead. Condemned was a decent effort as a launch title for the 360, but the sequel disappointed. With Dead Space, we get a terrifying title that is thoroughly enjoyable and deep. You’ll get anywhere between 9-12 hours from the single-player, but you’ll want to play through it again on higher difficulties. It might not be as revolutionary or refined as Resident Evil 4 was, but this will tie us over until Resident Evil 5. Dead Space is a scary, intense, edge-of-your-seat game that surprises you, scares you and throws everything including the kitchen sink at you.

9. Bioshock

The halls of Rapture will forever stick in gamers minds after they take down the final Big Daddy and get to the surface. Bioshock had charm and wit oozing out of every nook and cranny, it’s just a shame it took so long to reach the PS3. Every gamer should try and experience this unique and amazing title.

8. Burnout Paradise

Criterion Games have set the bar high for DLC with their current title Burnout Paradise. Sure it’s been out for twelve months, but it feels just as fresh as it did the day early adopters first got the game. With a slew of free DLC and the release of premium DLC starting now, this game is guaranteed to keep you coming back for more!

What we said in our review

Burnout Paradise maintains all of the action and enjoyment from previous Burnout titles, but adds a few features that make the gameplay a little less enjoyable. There is a lot of backtracking as well as a more repetitive feel towards the events. But even still, it looks fantastic, the cars handle very well, it sounds good and has the potential to be in your Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 for a very, very long time.

7. Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction

Ratchet and Clank have always been a force to be reckoned with for Playstation gamers, and their first outing on the current gen hardware could very well be the best in the series so far. Polished graphics backed up by challenging and fun platforming mayhem! If you are a fan or fun or platformers, this is a must have in your collection.

What we said in our review

Perhaps the best in the series. The weapons, gameplay, humor, sound and lastability all make this a worth-while purchase for any Playstation 3 owner.

6. Resistance 2

Nathan Hale is back to fight off the Chimera in an alternate history in Insomiac’s Resistence 2. Sequel to the best selling launch title for the big, black behemoth, expectations were high, and with 60 player online battles, it certainly deserves a spot in your collection.

What we said in our review

Resistance 2 is a great addition to any Playstation 3 owners collection. It will keep the veterans of Fall of Man happy with plenty of new on offer to compliment the old, but is friendly enough that new players to the series will be able to catch on and get the idea of what is going on. Offering tighter controls, a solid and impressive online suite and a lengthy campaign featuring some of the best set pieces you are likely to see in gaming for a long time, there is plenty to keep all gamers happy. While the visuals aren't breathtaking they certainly are nice to look at, and a good consistent frame rate makes this game a pleasure to do battle with.

5. Grand Theft Auto IV

Plenty of gamers under-appreciate what GTAIV has achieved. They compare it to previous GTA titles and make notes of missing features, such as planes and the ability to buy property.

Although Rockstar didn't include those features, they implemented gameplay mechanics that have set a new standard in the industry. Gamers often cite it's strong narrative as a negative, but anyone would be ludicrous to do so. GTAIV is able to implement strong storytelling techniques with a physics engine that is ahead of its time. This title is the stepping stone for a franchise that has always set a standard. No game this generation has made as much a leap from previous iterations as GTAIV has.

What we said in our review

Grand Theft Auto IV is the best game of the past decade and probably one of the best games ever made. It has not only evolved the classic and popular GTA style, but also redefined and created an all new single-player and multiplayer experience. It will exceed your expectations, surprise and entertain you and please you in every which way, because it’s original and deep. The gameplay is a revolutionary aspect that will become a standard in the industry, the story is reminiscent of an Oscar-calibre feature film and the presentation and graphics are top notch. There are some minor problems, but none of them are worth going into much detail because they are so heavily dwarfed by the countless number of positives this game has on offer.

4. Killzone 2

Killzone 2 had more hype behind it than any other shooter this generation. After the E3 showings and continual delays, expectations were beyond high, and Guerrilla delivered an outstanding shooter, and a fantastic gameplay experience.

What we said in our review

Killzone 2 offers more than just outstanding visuals and audio so real that it sounds like World War III is in your living room. It offers a top notch, cut above the rest first person experience, complimented with an impressive multiplayer component. The catalogue of weapons is impressive and a pleasure to do battle with, the AI is smart, effective and will cause you some pain and even though it's set in the future, Killzone 2 paints a picture that is very real. It's a good enough reason to invest into a PS3

3. Uncharted: Drakes Fortune

One of the most enjoyable action/adventure games to be released in a long time. Mixing elements from Tomb Raider with a touch of Indiana Jones and Gears of War gunplay for good measure, Naughty Dog delivered loveable and more importantly believeable characters in Nathan Drake and his ensemble cast. A great title that is worthy a look.

2. LittleBigPlanet

LittleBigPlanet was a title that just grew and grew with each and every month approaching release date. Media Molecule have served up a rich and engrossing platformer that can be glossed over by the casual gamers, but has enough depth to bring the hardcore crowd back for more. A truly unique title, exclusive to the PS3.

What we said in our review

LittleBigPlanet simply offers so much depth and scope to a seemingly simple, enjoyable and fun platformer. Featuring some of the best and unique graphics we are likely to see this generation, an active community churning out levels at an alarming rate and a decent soundtrack to boot, LittleBigPlanet is sure to be a long term hit, offering something different to the masses.

1. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots

The Metal Gear series has always been renowned for its revolutionary story telling mechanics, backed up by stealthy gameplay and pixel perfect graphics, but no expectations could prepare the gaming public for what Kojima and his team would serve up to us with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

What we said in our review

There’s one thing holding MGS4 back from perfection, and that’s overall accessibility. It’s hard to recommend this title to a casual gamer as the cutscenes, complex storyline and intimidating gameplay can be a major turn-off, especially for those unfamiliar with the games style. It’s a niche title that will always be remembered as one of the most emotionally driven cinematic experiences ever and sets a very high standard in the gaming industry.

COD 4 was a definitive game, COD W@W was just the same game re-skinned with a few new elements, I didn't think it was worthy of the list.

Having said that this is games for Playstation 3 owners, not overall awesome games. These are the top 20 games that a Playstation 3 owner should own for that console.
