Guides \ Assassin's Creed Preview

One title that has had the video game public talking over the past week or so is Assassin’s Creed, the so-called “GOTY” contender from Ubisoft that has been relatively well received overseas and delayed down-under; we all know the drill.

From the get-go, AC has always seemed to be the true successor to the wonderful Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, a title that looked similar, seemed to play the same and offered the same feel that we’ve experienced through countless other impressions and gameplay videos of AC. We got a chance to play AC at the eGames Expo yesterday and a little today, and we have to say that the game looks set to be one of the most unique and accessible titles of the year and perhaps even the new-generation.

We have no doubt that the copy we played at eGames is as close to the final game as you can get, considering that the game has been “gold” for weeks now and has already been released in the States. It would have already been out here had a delay not set the title back till next week. Fortunately, there isn’t all that much negativity that has come out of what we played and seeing as though the game is all but released, it’s very encouraging to say considering that the game had some development problems in the past.

The gameplay is so unique and creative that it was quite beautiful to watch one of the Ubisoft staff, who was obviously an expert at the title, play the game. This is because that, for anyone playing it the first time, the controls can take a little bit to get used too but once they are mastered they can be used in such a manner as to create a sensual and wonderful flow of actions and techniques. For example, you can walk by holding the left trigger, run by holding the right trigger and if you press A while walking, you’ll go into free-running mode which makes Altair, our “heroin”, automatically climb walls and shoot across building roof-tops. Once you get a flow going and master these controls and use them to the best ability with the most consistency, you’ll understand what we mean by it being beautiful to watch. While we didn’t get an extensive play of what was on display, it looks as though the maps will be massive and there will be an incredible amount of land to cover.

The combat system is easily the most important aspect of a title like this, considering that the main point of the title is to exceed as an assassin and master the skills of the deadly art. Like the general gameplay mechanics, the combat system can take a little while to get used to but once we were able to understand the controls and abilities of the enemy AI we were able to move more freely and act more appropriately in the environment. The enemy AI also works very well. For example, if you’re standing in a blocking stance, the enemies will back off and refrain from attacking you, seemingly being cautious to an attack. The gameplay as a whole works like a mixture of the Splinter Cell series and Prince of Persia.

Without doubt Assassin’s Creed plays like a game with a mission; to be the most unique title of the year. Its gameplay is great from the preview we got to play and graphics are smooth. There weren’t any real downfalls we could think of from the time we played and we can’t promise that the title will be flawless come its Australian release next week, but at the moment it seems to be one of the must have titles for the PS3 and XBOX 360.

No. These are impressions of what was on show. Once we get a full copy of the game then yeah, we can talk about that. But from what we played at the show, we didn't experience that. Got a good 30 minutes in.
