Sony Charging Publishers for Free Downloads

Free game demos and downloadable content is costing game publishers quite a bit of cash every time they are downloaded from the PlayStation Network. Sony have begun charging game publishers each time a piece of free content is downloaded.

MTV Multiplayer reports that Sony implemented a pay per gigabyte system as of October 1st last year. It now costs publishers USD $0.16 per downloaded gigabyte of free content, while that may seem small it adds up. Game demos are often over 1GB; if a million gamers download a demo of that size it's costing the publisher USD $160,000. The publisher is only charged during the first 60 days that the demo or free DLC is available on PSN, although that's when most content is downloaded.

Both Microsoft and Nintendo do not charge publishers for free content. This may have shed some light on why demos are often released on the Xbox Live Market Place up to a week before PSN. If multi-console owners had already downloaded the content on 360 it would save the publisher some much needed coin in a time when everyone is struggling financially.

I think it might actually be because Microsoft charge users $80 a year, Sony are trying to get some of the costs covered by Publishers. But considering the financial crisis I wouldn't be surprised if some publishers decided to forgo the PS3 with some free content and make it 360 exclusive just because it's cheaper.

I wouldn't be surprise if we start to see less demo's from 3rd party games!

Petty publishers considering how much they would make from those DLC/demos would far outweigh a small fee per GB used. Especially cos more people have access to PSN and would of course produce more downloads, sounds to me like another media driven minor issue that doesn't affect us at all what with us not being the ones to pay. In fact we don't get premium DLC like GTA4 & Fallout 3 anyway, Sony will just have to keep on with making great 1st party games in favour of exclusive DLC much better plan anyway.

i think it is fair enough and often worth it for a developer. sony have to maintain the store so why not charge as otherwise they r not getting there cut. and it is money well spent for a developer, prob. like a third of ppl who play a demo will go out and buy the full game.

Its worth the fee for dlc, free demos and game videos no so much. If this is the price publishers have to pay to keep the psn free then I say "Pay up b!tches"!

I once tried to download the Star Wars Force Unleashed demo like 2 days earlier than the PSN release.

However, it turned out only Gold members could access it at the time.

So if publishers end up delaying free content e.g. demos on the PSN by a few weeks, hoping multi-platform owners will download it on the Xbox 360 ...

Then I'm at a serious disadvantage. And I'm sure I won't be the only one.

um i dont see why this comes as a surprise.
they need to get paid somehow...microsoft's model is consumers pay for it....sony's model is publishers pay for it.
somehow id rather the latter.

If it means that publishers put extra effort into reducing the size of demos, then I'm all for it! 1GB of data is a huge amount, especially for a demo. Do you really think all that data is needed for it?

Demo's are like advertising. You pay to advertise, so paying to have your demo put out there for users seems fair enough.

FF13 demo can take up 20GB if i care. as long as it does not blow. the FF7 Advent Children Limited Edition in Japan comes with a 2 HOUR DEMO of FF13. WTF?!!?! why can't Aus, US, Europe, and so on ever get anything good at the same time as japan or ever?!

maybe sony should consider premium PSN memberships (paid for) and basic (free, online play and so on) memberships. That way they make money. but still its a lose- win situation.

Yeah i'd rather get the content later then have to pay for a subscription.
There is something wrong about Xbox/Wii creating their own 'currency' on each system in points. What stops them changing the value of the currency, I ask?
