I reckon what Australia needs, is better classifications education for the public. I wonder how many adults out there know the difference between G - PG - M - MA15+. You can't restrict R18+ content in Australia just because the public doesn't know the difference between G/PG and M and MA15+/R18+.

The US's ESRB kinda makes sense: E for Everyone, T for Teen, M for Mature, AO or Adults Only.

Exactly a small element was changed and then it was granted an MA rating and it still contains the very adult gameplay. Wouldn't it be better to grant it an R rating so parents are more informed of what is in the game, and it makes it harder for kids to get?

i totally agree with this.. many games which have a MA rating have content which i dont think is ok for younger people.. and with an R18 rating parents would definatly know this is not for kids.

The US has higher ratings for games than us, but developers don't make games with just blood and gore and no story or decent gameplay.
Basically developers know the average gamer isn't going to buy a game just because it has over the top gore in it. They know such games won't bring in the big bucks. So really, Aust having an R rating won't have an effect on the kinds of games made. It'll just stop some games from being edited in order to be released here.
And I'm assuming you're joking about the kids growing up to be psychos part 'cause no decent parent would allow their children to play R rated games.

I voted that gamers should have a choice. Well, those of us over 18.

kids MIGHT grow up to be killers if they watch too many R18 movies as well but noone considers that fact...why deny the majority of choice when its available in all other media? I actually don't see the reason why Australia needs an R18+ rating system, there is pretty much no difference in gameplay wise in a game apart from a few readjustments, if it's been edited for MA15+ standards. Not much is changed and allows everyone 15 and above to enjoy the game. I myself am only 15 and am happy to know I can purchase a highly anticipated video game for myself without parental guidance or what so ever. I'd say to keep it the way it is now or if there is a big difference why a game should receive an R18+ rating than so be it. Either way, it's what the gamers want and I'm just having my say.

I'm 15 and I think we should have R 18+ rated games on only the most Gorey and horrific games, for example Man Hunt a few years ago was banned from Australia for the stuff it had in it, They should've just chucked a R 18+ on it and you can only buy it with ID that your over 18, not even with Parents permission can you buy the game.

Ratings do squat in my opinion. It all about the mentality and the education of the child. I was playing m15+ games when i was like 9 and i turend out just fine.

Just the media seems to blame everything bad on vid games and movies. Bloody media blow everything out of proportion.

Oh hell yeah i'm 60. Not. Don't even think a 60 year could work a computer.

And i'm sure they would be able to get a copy. I don't think when a parent buys them a game they want, they don't look at the rating. I probably wouldn't notice. And of course kids can turn crazy from video games. There have been many cases from the grand theft auto series ... and they aren't even r18.

Whatever i've said enough.

To be honest though, I should add that most R18+ games don't interest me. So technically speaking, I should've voted "I don't care either way".

But talking from a freedom point of view, I think Australia needs it. I don't think it's fair that a collective group of people dictates what the country can or cannot view/play. And I also think it's not fair that the majority suffers because of the minority.

Yes, every other media has it,they do not have to censure or remove parts to get released, R18+ should be uniform across all media to inform that said media contains ADULT material,and is not suitable for those under 18,this would send a clearer message to parents when deciding what to buy for their children.The notion that an R rating would lead to an influx of pure gore/sexually explicit games is laughable,the industry is self regulatory, Sony,MS &Nintendo still decide what gets released on their platforms,the R rating would simply mean gamers experience the game how it's creator truly intended,exactly like film......equality for games as a true medium with merit is all i want.

i dont think there is anywhere in the western world that considers rape ok...

we're the only western country without a r18 classification for games.
hence what is considered r18 in Europe (for example) gets passed off as a m15+ game here (far cry 2), or gets edited (gta4), either way we loose at the moment.

we need a r18 catagory like everyone else.

Well. I think introducing an R18+ rating system can have ups & downs.
No need to remove content from games aimed at older gamers. Though R18+ games can still be accessed by younger children who are that desperate to get the game.

If it turns out so, using the R18+ symbol willi nilli will result badly. Games which actually do involve strong sex or extremely heavy violence should carry the symbol.

the point that some of you are missing is that while an R18 rating would have allowed GTA IV to pass without trouble, the drug use in fallout 3 may still have caused it to fail under an r18 system, every game we recieve will still be checked by the OFLC and games that are deemed "unfit" will still get banned. ie purely sexual games or games featuring sexualised violence.

All in all, jsut remember that these are 'just games'

... and because i think a lot of people would realistically think that average age of 30 stat is not entirely accurate.

Sexual violence and rape are not going to hit our shores anytime soon, R18 or not.

All other countries (developed) have an R18 rating for games, developers don't really care about Australia so us not having one isn't really on their mind until they are forced to change it. Fallout 3 is the first I can think of that has had all version altered to suit the Aussie rating not just the Australian version.

Exactly. An R18+ rating doesn't open the flood gates for all sorts of violent or sexually explicit games.
It just means games that would normally be banned/edited won't be edited when they're released here (oh, and kids and teenagers can't legally buy them

).

I've noticed the majority of members who think we don't need an R18+ rating are under 18. lol Afraid you guys might miss out on the games because edited versions may not be released?
