you cant say fallout will be a better game purely because it got GOTY. you gotta remember that Borderlands will be competing with games such as MW2, Uncharted 2, Assasins Creed 2. etc.
and the games are nothing alike from what i have seen from the borderlands videos besides the fact that they are both are RPG and FPS
hybrids. Fallout is very clunky, and lets face it, it has terrible aiming mechanics, whereas borderlands seems to be more focused on the shooting aspect of the game rather than the role playing side of things.

its a fps with a story (like cod4) with rpg elements (loot, skill trees, leveling etc) and is open world roaming like fallout or oblivion
if you like fallout/oblivion/cod etc you should get this
the art style is bitchin'
oh yeah, it also has +18 million guns
