My Ps3 has been freezing up a lot lately(don't know if its the console or the fw?)

now tonight i was playing, and its not a hot night, and the ps3 is going nuts. last summer it did the same (except only when it was actually hot)

so i was thinking is it worth buying a slim. do the slims get as hot as the phat's?

sure do. they only use an AC power cord now, so there is a transformer....inside the ps3

but its fine if you just think of it like an xbox: dont leave it on longer than 6-8 hours etc.....and definitely no folding@home

It seems to get warm behind the slim but this appears to be from the fan expelling all the hot air rather then the unit itself overheating (if this makes sense). On the topic of sense if your sensible with the console it should go far but if your gonna play it for hours and hours on end well it may not last as long. But still HEAPS cooler then a 360 and much quieter too.

hey OZchap, "they use an AC power cord now"??? what did they use before? batteries?

they both have the power unit inside the console. It's basically the same as a PC power supply. this does get hot, but no where near as hot as the RSX and CPU.

Stublu, If you get a new one, would you like to sell that one that is playing up?

PS3 Slim has no heat issues. Unless you're really trying to cook it you should have no problems.

I put a desk fan next to my PS3 which cools the console, at night i turn the back switch off and once a week i cclean the console from dust.

As long as the fan slows down after gaming if you run a movie or something then it's fine,if it goes full force when your watching a movie or just on the XMB then the fan or vents are probably blocked by dust build up, i took mine apart and was shocked at the amount of dust even though i clean it & vacuum it twice a week... a fan should actually be placed in front of the PS3 or to the side not behind because that just blows the hot air back into the PS3.

prices aren't awesome but they are ok.

40gb complete unopened $100
80gb complete unopened $140
60gb complete unopened $160

If the console has been opened take $60 off the above prices

I live in North Queensland, No Winters here !!
Right now its 36 degree.

I've had my Fat since day 1. (Ohh Yeeaaahhh !!!)
I use ceiling fans or Air-con to keep the PS3 cool when its running hot.

Also do some maintenance !! You would be amazed at how much dust builds up in the vents and ports of a console, this can lead to the machine over-heating and an early trip to the console graveyard.

You can also buy cooling fans for the PS3 that plug into any USB port.
GAME has these fans on sale at the moment for $19.95

Im not sure if this will help but make it dust itself. Turn it off at the power switch at the back of the PS3, then press the eject button and turn it back on while keeping the eject button held down.

I hope this helps

you know what i mean, quad

it uses a different power system now, i dont know whether its different watts, amps, or vyma-love-juice (obviously i dont know much about electronics), but it requires a transformer now, whereas the phats did not. and instead of doing like xbox and putting the transformer outside the console, they put it inside the console right?

you should not do this on a 60gb model, only on the 40/80 models

won't work on a 60gb. to get the 60gb to do you must tip the console upside down. and that increases the heat and increases fan speed. the fan has several speeds.

fans from game are not good, as they blow air into the console and the fan is blowing air out of the console. it ends up creating a heat bubble. you need extracting fans.

like aussie dog said. maintenance is great. I service ps3's for $35. that is full dust removal, and new artic silver thermal compound applies, all without breaking the warranty seal.
