going to be putting in a 500GB HD in my PS3 soon, bt was just wondering if theres anything to watch out for when selecting a HD?
i was told a roumer to look out for 7200rpm ones as they heat up too much for the PS3 and can cause YLOD, or is this hogwash?
if not, does it really matter between 5400rpm and 7200rpm?

i was looking at this one:
www.megabuy.com.au/

WD 500GB, 5400rpm, 8MB cache. its the only one that mentions it runs cool?

Sounds good. I don't think you'd notice a huge difference between 5400 and 7200 on PS3s anyway.

So why uprgrade a HDD exactly? If you havent come close to reaching the limit should you still upgrade to make thing on the PS3 process faster? Does having the more memory increase speed?

does your ps3 get warm or hot after long periods of use?
does anyone know what rpm the stock ps3 HD is? 40G/60G/80G

i plan on using my ps3 as a storage device for dvd rips and mp3z , so i need a fair bit of room. i want a few hundred movies on there. making it a proper multimedia unit.

and no, having more memory doesnt increase speed. just memory.

mines only a 40GB and im nearly full with 15-20 movies + mp3z and game save data.

the stock one is 5400rpm and theres this site that shows you the difference between the speeds and its just not worth it at all. go gor a normal 5400. i put in a 320gb drive bout a year ago and was easy to do and is now sweet as.

heres the site

Yeah, it does get fairly warm...right at the back, but I think that might just be the internal power converter. I really don't know how hot it "should" feel because I put the 500 in right after I bought the Slim, so I don't know what it was like with the 120.

Anyway, I didn't buy the 7200 deliberately; I just wanted a 500GB HD, and it happened to be 7200rpm.

EDIT: That said, I am glad mine is the 7200rpm because the PS3 takes soooooo long to load games, I'll take any advantage I can get. (I know the gains are minor, but, still...) - Say what you want about the 360, it loads a hell of a lot faster.

lol yeah that wot i thought when i found that article last year. like unless it was 5 to 10 seconds then maybe but its not that important. and like you i use mine for heaps of vids and mp3z, just heaps convenient to not have to keep deleting stuff or have an external drive, plus the networking media thing drops out and lags.

good luck with the install theres plenty of pages about it and videos so simple just make sure u delete all the stuff u dont need backed up (ie vids and mp3z if u have em sumwhere else) and then back up the important bits like game saves.

so yeah have fun

From Huddo's link:

"One somewhat unexpected discovery was that this speedy 7200 RPM hard drive was no louder (or hotter) than its slower counterpart - an impressive testament to the PS3's sound-dampening design. In other words, there's really no reason not to buy a speedier hard drive for your PS3."

and

"Where you'll really appreciate a faster hard drive is transferring or downloading full games and other media onto the hard drive. For the faster speed 7200rpm drive, you'll pay around $20 extra across the board. So if you're in the market for a PS3 HDD upgrade, it's worth considering 7200rpm if you plan to frequently transfer gigs upon gigs MP3s and videos."

lol rainbow thats some good points there. didnt remember that being there but probli a good point to consider, especially cos prices have come down so much since i bought mine. if ur running a phat id definitely get a 7200 but the slims have a smaller fan so yeah im not sure...should be sweet tho. you can always give it to vyma to fix lol

but yeah they all the same.. id recommend watching a video of someone doing it before u try just to be safe

also note that as soon as u format the new drive the ps3 will chew up a good chunk of it (20-25%) i dunno why but it does it to all drives so yeah just letting ya know

EDIT: its probly less than 20% probli round 10% i looked and for a 500 gig ur looking at 465 once formatted

my first 60gb has a 500gb 7200rpm HDD in it. slighlty faster loading times and install times. much faster data transfer times. I haven't seen any rise in ps3 temp. has been in for 5months now. it is a seagate

Put a 500gb WD in over the weekend as my 80gb was getting a little full. SO easy to do. Slowest part was backing up my 80gb as it took around 1hr 15mins to the USB Hard Drive.
