Curious as to the percentage of people with various HD displays. I have LCD at the moment, but my brother just bought a 42 inch 1080p plasma...and it's the ant's. So plasma for me for Xmas!!!

xracing where did you get your kuro from? Would you mind taking a few snaps? Because from what I've heard from other buyers, their 1080p version won't arrive until the first batch gets here at the end of November, the non-1080p one is here in stock though. I am thinking of selling my Sony 46X in order to get the 60 inch 1080p Pioneer Kuro.

David I dedicated 5 hours to an old thread explaining technologies and TVs in a thread called "what t.v" (i think..).

So just hop over there and see it for yourself.

He has a W, which is totally different from the X - Motionflow 100/120Hz, Bravia Engine PRO etc...

Yes I do believe that the 40X is one of the best LCDs on the market, though if you wait until early December, the price would be at least $600 cheaper.

Thats kool. The more debate the better. When your spending $3000+ you want the good oil.

It takes time to research, you cannot pay the salesmen for their words. Unless they are very knowledgeable - I find them perpetually rare.

Dave just tell me the environment that you are going to put your TV in, your viewing habits (eg what you mostly watch) and I will give you a suggestion.

i've got a Pana 42" plasma px600a, very happy with it..
picture quality is great, my brother in law has the Bravia X 46", and my picture is not that far off his in terms of PQ..and i spent less than half what he paid for his LCD

Thanks entice. I know. I just felt I needed first hand perspective on the differences. I've not played a PS3 game on a plasma, but after seeing my bro playing Blu-ray on his 1080 plasma: i'm a convert.

Dark bedroom, usually at night. Get backlight glow from my Samsung, and some blur. Want no blur and deep blacks. Looking at 42" 1080p Panasonic plasma. sit (lie) about 8 feet from screen.

Okay...I'm going to waste 10 minutes of my study time and do this for you:

LCD can often display better HD images since the pixels are stitched together more closely. However the black levels of LCDs are appalling and you will often find that dark scenes will be bluish gray and there won't be much details. If you are a videophile then you will see that LCDs do not display a "true" colour skin tone of the actors. The good thing about LCDs is that they do not have a fan humming throughout the entire movie. Plasmas will also use more power and get hotter as well, unlike LCDs. Another con of LCDs is that when watching fast moving scenes, the details of the image will tend to be blurry and runny, this is also a main problem associated with LCDs.

PDPs (Plasma Display Panels) is the more favoured type for watching movies. You will however notice some "noise" - lumpy and grainy pixels - when watching in HD, hence PDPs are not as good as LCDs when watching HD contents. Plasma on the other hand, offer superior black levels and colour reproduction; PDPs also have better motion response, so you will not encounter blurry moving images, but clear and define palettes. The main issue with PDPs is that "burn ins" can kill your TV...burn ins are "printed" pixels that stay on the screen permanently and cannot be removed - this is due to the "gas pixels" bursting because they are static for a prolonged period of time.

To sum it up:

If you are a sport fan, movie fanatic, videophile, then get plasma.

If you are a gamer, HD freak, eco friendly consumer, power bill-phobic and long term buyer, then go for LCD.

Scott I assume it's an LG plasma? Hehe...

Dave, as long as you opt for the good brands, both LCDs and PDPs will give you 2 cherries on the icing. Just don't go for the $500 ones at the markets.

So many 1080 TVs on the market at the moment. 42 is realy bigger than I need for my bedroom (37 or 40 would be ample), just hooked on this Panasonic plasma.

I would wait for a while, the 42inch Panasonic plasma is competing with the Sony 40X - their prices will fall like a dead rabbit.
