It's a long story....
Okay, when I was out and about trying to purchase a new TV (my Philips LCD broke...), I basically traveled around NSW to gather different opinions. Each time I ask a new salesperson some questions, they would tell me a different story.
I got so confused and angry about all these techno gizmos; I decided to be my own salesperson.
It started off on the internet, where I would spend an hour each day researching all the key technologies and analysing them. I then would pop into shops fairly regularly to check up on the TVs and perform my own analysis (eg piss the salesman off so they would not bother me).
After a few months, I decided to offer help to my friends and family members (it was in October 2006, the time where new TVs are released) - so I offered help and TAH DAH....I advised them on the right TVs and now they are happy old chaps.
It wasn't until November 2006 that I bought the TV I had been looking for, I refused all help from the salesmen and outsmarted all of them by asking all these questions on the technology used in the TVs and their specifications. In the end, I ended up purchasing a 46inch 1080p Sony Bravia X.
But worst came when my TV suffered the ubiquitous "backlight clouding" effect. I gave Sony calls every week but the same reply came back to me: "You need to let the TV stay on for 96 hours straight." - Nothing solved it.
