The X has amazing pictures - I do agree. But wait until you put it next to the upcoming Sharp TVS. But the things is....the Sharp will cost a lot more

I do recommend you the 46X, it has all the great video processing chips (although it displays SD contents hideously) and a great range of connections.

Just remember that the difference between the XBR and the X is only the bezel, the TV is the same, it just has a better look.

Don't pay for the extra $300 for the XBR if you don't need it.

It's an "okay" TV at the moment, if you have an extra few hundred dollars, the F8 would be a better choice:

If you're still stuck on that budget, then the Sony W Series would be the best choice:

The Samsung you asked about is an "average" TV, in my opinion the Sony W series has more to offer at that same price point.

Toshiba LCDs are pretty average, they are aimed at the general "average" market, hence they are budget-type TVs with "average" specifications.

If you want high quality LCD TVs, Sony, Sharp and Samsung will perform the best.

But the thing is, I don't know what the F8's static contrast ratio is. The F8's dynamic contrast ratio is the highest at 25 000:1, but it'd be useless if its static is at around 1800:1

Or for an extra few hundred dollars (sorry!) The Sony 40X would be the good one to have, there are more "toys" and more functions such as x.v.Y.C.C colour space.

Static contrast = the difference in the black and white level

Dynamic contrast = how black the black can go

If the static is low and the dynamic is high, you will just get BLACK images and not "defined and detailed black"

Say...you are playing a grey image, if the static is high, then you will actually see the grey image. If the dynamic is high but the static is low, then you will see the grey image as black.

Yep, if you want a 40inch TV for around $3000 under then go for the Sony BRAVIA W

If you can up that price range further for the 40inch, then the X or the F8 would be the best 2 choices - HOWEVER, I can offer only opinions, you need to go and see them for yourself! Only you can decide which TV you want. I have narrowed the 2 TVs down for you, you can now do some negotiating with the salesman. I believe you should be able to the the TVs for around $800 cheaper than the RRP.

UPDATE: I just gave Samsung a call, they pretty much said that all they could say is "The contrast ratio of the TV is 25 000:1" But on the plus side The F8 has 6ms response time, so you will notice clearer picture quality on the F8 than the X.

Sony goes through a yearly cycle for the TVs, Samsung tends to be more competitive and will constantly release cheaper and better TVs than their rivals.

I think the F8 would be the winner here, cheaper, better and is in the "premium" line of the Samsung LCD TV range.

Mark I just edited my post. The static contrast of the F8 should be more than 1800:1 - this is the average for the top end TVs.

Sorry if I sound like a bitch here, but Toshiba is the sideliner in the LCD TV competition. If I would rank Toshiba against Sony, Sharp, Samsung, Panaonic and Philips, the Toshiba would come last.

I apologise for my crude terms, but to me Toshiba TVs don't belong in the "cream of the crop" TVs.
