as an average person who goes into harvey norman and sees all these beautiful lcd and really cant see any difference between any of them what do u actually make your judgement on as as far as brands go?
personaly i reckon the toshiba i have looks fantastic and i couldnt pick the differnce even now when i go in i cant see.
so is it picture quality or something else?

Specifications on paper and in real life.

Also when you're in the shops, salespeople will always make the TVs they want to sell look nice. Also remember that TVs on display all have their settings on max.

Toshiba TVs are very nice, and it really depends on one's judgement. I do not prefer Toshiba TVs though

i use a 42inch plasma, and by brother inlaw uses a 50inch LCD, i have to admit the LCD brings out the colour more, but plasmas are far cheaper now.
He paid 4.5k i paid 2k.

Yes, that is correct to an extent. Samsung & Sony make their LCDs in the same factory, Sharp has their own factory, Philips has their own factory....I'm not so sure about the others.

Yes I agree, but plasmas and LCDs now have the same lifespan - 60 000 Hours.

Unless you have your TV turned on 24/7, it doesn't matter if your TV lasts for 30 000 hours because it will be outdated within 12 months.

Entice, you end up getting a Kuro yet?

I'm kind of looking at a 50 inch set, and hear good things about them. Not many people carry them and they are kind of on the high side for the full 1080p sets.

The Panasonic 50PZ700A also looks nice to me, and is a good price. But you basically have to add another $400 to it to meet the Pioneer extended warranty...

I've read your comments on the Sharp LCDs also - noone seems to sell them though.

Michael, I am dirt broke right now because of all the xmas presents

The Kuro will get cheaper after Christmas (around Jan or Feb) and if that's when I can afford it....then I'll probably get either the 50inch, but if luck strucks me then I'll get the 60inch (mortgage my house probably...).

The Panasonic 1080p plasma also has stunning pictures and colour, I would seriously consider that one as well, but I like the Pioneer more

At the end of the day, I'm just an average uni student who makes less money a year than their HEX fees.

Oh and Sharp TVs? Yeah, unfortunately Australians don't get the full Sharp benefits (those Japanese...) and hence Sharp can only be bought or ordered at larger shops. But once you see a Sharp, you will never want to go back

Poor Kim Yeah, being an adult now I try to get our families to just stick with presents for any kids, and just get stuff ourselves Or alternatively I just make something for them like some nice food.

I hope I can hold out until the price drop next year on the Kuro. My rear pro Wega crt is starting to have too many issues. The projection engine intermittently stops working (in the service menu, the PJE submenu group is just gone when it happens), and last night it was like the input selection and tuner died momentarily as well (it was bizarre - I couldn't get to even the mnormal TV menu, and the picture was bad and grainy like an old TV and all I could do was go up and down channels - and it was like doing it on a really old TV where you have horizontal hold stability issues so when you change channels you suddenly could see the teletext codes in the black area of the picture).

I'm also getting sick of having to turn it on for 30 minutes before watching anything and it converges. I love the picture on it, but boy, it is a lot of work. And I can never get rid of the overscan.

But that Pioneer is probably a good buy though. Feotoid recommended it also. But it'd cost about $4k with the extended warranty.

I'm still a little worried about phosphor burn though. I've never played games on my CRT rear pro for fear of damage (other than Silent Hill which doesn't have any fixed sc

Yeah, I'm scared of burn ins on the Pioneer But it's built from the ground up so hopefully the issue's resolved. But I'll still be worried, hehe

I wouldn't really recommend rear projection to anybody after my friend's one broke after 1 year and my uncle's one got dimmer after 2 years. Rear projection TVs are for people who want big but cheap. Michael I'm sure you'll be very happy with the Kuro or the Pana.

But here's the thing, the 1080p Kuro is around $8000, the 1336x768 is $4000, ouch

But hopefully it will get cheaper because Panasonic may dominate sales.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend a rear pro either - but 4 years ago when I got it, it was way better than anything else available. But with rear pro - you do get lens flaring (eg, something bright on LHS of screen, right hand side dark, you can see a flare on the RHS). And CRT - the convergence and linearity and overscan. Yuck. But if you look after it (and don't overdrive the tubes) it lasts well. People are still impressed with the pic quality on mine.

Even now, whichever way you look the current technologies are still flawed, even though now we actually for pretty well the first year in Plasmas history, and about the second years in LCD TVs history, we now have full HD support. I was looking for a gaming TV a year and a half ago, and ended up getting the Dell monitor as I was sick of the LCD panels back then all being 768 line, and poor refresh rates. It was an insult when you could buy LCD monitors with 1200 line res and 4ms reponse times. And even now the screen refresh rate handling of TVs vs monitors is utterly woeful.

Until SED and OLED are out, we are dealing with fundamentally limited technology.

$8k? Ouch... Forget that then... The Panasonic is well under half that.

I can't figure from the research on the Panasonic if it will take a 24p signal. Looking at the specs it only lists 50 and 60 Hz HDMI signals, so I'm guessing not. It is pretty annoying. To get proper 24fps (eg, movies) you need something with a refresh rate as a multiple of 24, and neither 50 or 60 are... I guess with 60HZ it is somewhat like the cruddy old 2:3 pull down with NTSC. You get frame 1 x2, then frame 2 X3. So no smooth pans.
<

Sigh, the Panasonic definitely does not do 24fps. Man this makes me so mad. Why the heck can't manufacturers use their brains and at least have a 48hz mode? So you get a smooth 2 frame doubling?

From whathifi.com/

"However, I also believe that there are two sides of this discussion: 1: Does the Panny's do "true 24 Hz" or not, and 2: How big of an issue is it if the display plays back true 24 Hz or not. First things first: I've tested 1080P/24 on various Panasonic displays, including the latest batch of PZ70EA and PZ700, plus the new 37" LCD (whatever the model number is). These models, like the PX70's etc, does accept a 1080P/24 input, but they do _NOT_ display them at a multiple of 24 (48, 72 etc). They do introduce 2-3 judder, and inputting 1080P/24 from a PS3 looks _exactly_ the same as inputting 1080P/60 from the same PS3 - whereas in comparison a Pioneer is noticably less juddery when inputting 1080P/24. Whatever some people may think about the importance of 2-3 judder, the Pannny's do _not_ get rid of 2-3 judder, even though they accept a 24 Hz input. Just because they accept the signal, doesn't mean that they actually display it correctly. I don't agree with Andy that converting 24 Hz to 60 Hz is a demanding task that one shouldn't expect a display to do - on the contrary, framerate conversion is something a lot of cheap displays do, i.e. converting 50 Hz to 60 Hz, avoiding the need of driving the panel with different framerates."
