With millions and millions of pornographic DVDs available is it a bad business decision to decide not to support the genre, thus forcing the hand (so to speak) of consumers into buying HD-DVD player to watch the new era of HD pornograpy?

Back then there was no such thing as the internet so the only way for the porn enthusists to get their fix was to buy a tape of it, hence cassette tape won.

These days porn's biggest distribution platform is the internet, porn companies push downloadable porn more than hardcopies by far.
