You can purchase a HDMI cable almost anywhere in sydney but HDMI to DVI you would proberbly have to go to Harvey Norman or Bing Lee.
And yes i do recommened getting a HDMI cable, it almost tripled the picture quality for me.

The only thing about HDMI-DVI is that u get no AUDIO, but is it worth it???? Oh God Yes...... U will have to use ur regular AV leads to get the sound through another source like a stereo, After u set up ur HDMI, it will then ask u to adjust ur sound options, u'll get it..

For a hdmi -> dvi cable to work correctly both the component its plugged into (in this case the ps3) & the display both need to support hdcp. The ps3 does support hdcp so its quite likely the display didnt.

Not all lcd's monitors support hdcp, currently less than 30% of new displays sold have support

Yeah that's basically what I got told the last time I tried. Component cables at 1080i is a good enough though.
