Blu-ray \ DVD upscaling

hugo says:

Hey guys the DVD/BD settings gives you four options for upscaling:

Off
Double Scaling
Normal
Full Screen

Which is the optimal one to use if you do have a 1080p screen? I think it's double scale but I'm not 100% sure.

It's hard to tell!

From the PS website:
UPSCALING DVD OUTPUT

[DVD Upscaler] is an option in [BD/DVD Settings] under Settings. This enables users to adjust settings for upscaled output of DVDs.

[Off]: Disable upscaled output.
[Double Scale]*: Upscale and display with double horizontal and vertical dimensions without changing the proportions.
[Normal]: Upscale and display at a size that matches the screen size.
[Full Screen]: Upscale and display at full screen by changing proportions and stretching the image
*This option can be used only when the video output of the PS3 system is set to 1080p/1080i.

Entice says:

it depends if your TV is 4:3 or 16:9. Normal tends to make the game/movie 4:3 while "full" displays everything that is outputted, including stretching the 4:3 image to fit your 16:9 screen.

mines a widescreen lcd 32"

hugo says:

I think double would be the optimum as my old Phillips used to have Pixel Plus or Double Line and Double line was a far superior picture modifier than pixel plus.

Entice says:

Double scale means that the pixel is enlarged twice the size to fit your television. Go for Full as it displays the pixels accurately, however 4:3 sources will be stretched on Full if you are using a 16:9 television.

Does the PS3 only up scale original DVD's and not backups?
Are other HMDI Upscaling dvd players?

05/28/2007 Planet Earth, New New York

Entice says:

The PS3 will scale up ALL DVDs through HDMI. SO if you've got a "movie" on your dvd then sure the PS3 will upscale it.

ZOIDBERG says:

I must have read some crap then where it only upscales original copywrite ones

longarms says:

actualy its the oppisit kinda if you dont have hdim and you are running your tv off component cables you carnt upscale copy protected dvd's

its just so that you carnt take the upscaled signal and run it through a video capture card to make an upscaled copy of the disc

Tell me what would be the point buying Blu-ray movies when the current DVDs can upscale to 1080i/1080p

Just a question guys I should know this but forgot
Whats the maximum output can component cables reach?

ectozar says:

Blyu-ray still looks and is superior as the resolution is "actual" 1080p, where as the DVD's being upscaled are not, their signal isnt converted to 1080p they just try to look 1080p, they actually end up being slighly blurred i've found.

Blu-ray still FTW.

ZOIDBERG says:

Blu Rays look loads better that upscaled DVDs. Its kinda like Upscaled PS2 games Vs PS3 games

06/03/2007 Planet Earth, New New York

grey_snake says:

Haha! I think upcaled dvds look closer to blurays then upscaled ps2 games look like ps3 games.

Thats craziness!!!
