Sixaxis wireless controller - 9/10
Well I though I would write a quick review of the Sixaxis controller. Since it is kinda hard to split it up into sections, I'll just give you a quick run down.
Overall extremely similar to the PS2 DualShock controller, but with few vital differences.
1. Wireless (almost):
The PS3 SixAxis uses Bluetooth technology and 1 PS3 unit can support up to 8 Bluetooth Devices (I personally have tried a 3 player game of Marvel
). What I meant by almost is that it runs on Li-Ion batteries and needs to be recharged after heavy game sessions by plugging into via USB on the PS3 (which it has 4 of). The controller itself sports a Mini-USB Plug at the front, which means if you got a PSP chances are you already have a cable!
PS. Oh and with Bluetooth devices, I also mean your Phone Headsets
2. PS Button:
Second thing all of you would notice is the introduction of the PS Button in the Centre of the controller.
By pushing that button while in the XMB of PS3, you can check the charge level of the controller. By doing it while listening to a song or watching a movie, it will bring up the XMB to let you do other things (ie. browse the net while listening to music)
By holding the button down in different situation will have different functions, but the most common are:
*Turn off Controller
*Turn off System
*Assign Controller Ports - In game will allow you to change from being Player 2 to Player 3 as an example.
3. Loss of DualShock = Loss of Weight:
As the controller has lost the DualShock "Rumble" function of the PS2's Counterpart (which won an award for it BTW), it also caused it to lose weight, making the controller much easier to handle than the old PS2 Controller.
4. Full Kickback on Lower Shoulder Buttons:
One of the things I noticed (while playing Resistance), is that the R2 & L2 Buttons now go much further b3yond being a button, they are now more of a lever. In Resistance you can duck fully, or kinda half way, by pushing L2. In GT-HD, you have more sensitivity in your Gas and Break.
5. SIXAXIS!
The feature some of you have heard about, somewhat akin to the Wii idea, SixAxis means the controller can "sense" where it is in all six directions. I find it a great addition to games.
In resistance - when you are on fire/grabbed by a "Zombie"/stunned, shake the controller to shake it off...
In marvel - you can grab an enemy by pushing [] and then just by moving the controller left or right, throw them in the respective direction.
In both Gripshift Demo and Motorstorm Demo (I don't have the full versions, but I would assume it's true for them also), you can literally drive cars (or bikes) just by turning the controller.
And that's just the beginning, I already hear developers talking about "secret" features in works for the PS3's SixAxis...
One company (not Sony) has already developed a prototype of an addon that can attach to existing SixAxis controllers (powered via Mini-USB), and another one that can be put inside an existing SixAxis Controller, that will allow DualShock capability. Sony said it had no plans to incorporate DualShock, back into the system though
Overall 9/10
